Inland vessel data monitoring with the RUT951 4G router

Highlights

✔ Inland vessels navigating Europe's waterways require precise, automated manoeuvring systems to safely handle complex situations like docking and lock transit, while staying continuously connected to land-based servers for remote monitoring and maintenance.

Argonics GmbH, a German specialist in inland navigation automation, developed the argoPositionPilot, a manoeuvring aid for vessels with rudder propellers and 360° bow thrusters, to make navigation safer and more intuitive for crews.

✔ Teltonika RUT951 4G router provides consistent cellular connectivity with dual SIM failover, 4 Ethernet ports, and a robust VPN security suite, bridging critical onboard systems with land-based servers across European waterways.

Keeping inland vessels connected across remote waterways

Inland waterways are a cornerstone of modern logistics, providing a cost-effective and greener alternative to road transport. In 2024 alone, approximately 473.3 million tonnes of goods were moved across Europe’s rivers and canals. Their efficiency relies heavily on precision navigation and seamless coordination across vast, often remote, aquatic networks.

Our partner, Argonics GmbH, specializes in developing efficient and safe navigation solutions tailored for the demands of waterway shipping. Founded on deep expertise in inland navigation, the company created the argoPositionPilot, a manoeuvring aid designed for vessels with rudder propellers and 360° bow thrusters. Through an intuitive interface consisting of a 3-way joystick and buttons, operators manage the vessel with precision and ease.

These manual inputs are automatically translated into synchronized movements of the bow thruster and rudder propeller in the corresponding direction. Constant monitoring ensures that the vessel maintains its intended course and velocity regardless of challenging currents or high winds. As a result, navigation near locks and within busy harbours becomes far more intuitive and significantly safer for the crew.

To keep the argoPositionPilot connected to land-based servers and enable remote monitoring and control, our partner needed a reliable 4G router capable of maintaining consistent, high-speed connectivity across varying network conditions.

Real-time data & remote control with the RUT951 LTE router

Argonics GmbH integrates the Teltonika RUT951 4G router as the central communication hub for its inland vessel automation. With four Ethernet ports, the router bridges critical onboard systems, including the PLC, touch panel, and control panel in the main control unit. This way, synchronized coordination and smooth data flow between all components ensures efficient vessel operations.

Industrial-grade durability makes this LTE router well suited for demanding maritime environments. With a wide operating temperature range of -40 °C to 75 °C and an IP30 ingress protection rating, it maintains stable performance regardless of the fluctuating conditions encountered on inland waterways.

Remote maintenance capabilities allow navigation parameters to be adjusted in real-time, ensuring vessels consistently perform at their peak. The commissioning process for new vessels is equally streamlined, as initial tests and configurations can be completed from the office in coordination with an onboard service engineer. Together, these capabilities reduce the need for physical travel and significantly speed up deployment.

Continuous monitoring of vessel health is supported by the router's 4G LTE connectivity, which transmits operational data to land-based servers for ongoing analysis. When new software upgrades are ready, OTA updates roll them out to the entire fleet simultaneously. Gauge levels, stream velocities, and reference tracks are delivered the same way, keeping every vessel updated with the latest navigational data without a single site visit.

Resilience is further strengthened by dual SIM functionality with auto-failover, backup WAN, firewall, and customizable switching scenarios to maintain stable communication under varying network conditions. Secure data transmission between the vessel and the land-based server is established through a robust suite of VPN protocols, including IPsec, L2TP, and DMVPN, giving our partner multiple options for protecting their data link.

"Teltonika's price-to-performance ratio, industrial-grade durability, and reliable Helpdesk support make their devices a natural fit for the long-term demands of our navigation solutions", Argonics GmbH
