Teltonika RutOS explained: key features and capabilities

How does RutOS simplify your network setup?


Built on an open-source foundation, RutOS gives you the flexibility to adapt the operating system to specific industrial requirements instead of limiting you to a fixed set of proprietary functions. When your deployment calls for deeper customisation, you can modify or extend the software to suit your infrastructure.

Reduce reliance on external converters with built-in industrial protocols


Connecting legacy machinery, modern PLCs, and cloud platforms often requires external hardware to translate between different communication protocols. Every additional converter increases deployment complexity, adds cost, and introduces another component that may require maintenance. RutOS  software supports widely used industrial protocols natively, helping you connect compatible field equipment through your router and reduce the need for separate conversion hardware.


  • Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP allow to communicate with compatible PLCs, sensors, and other industrial equipment over serial or Ethernet connections, making it easier to integrate both legacy and modern machinery.

  • DNP3 and IEC 60870-5 support data exchange across energy, utility, and industrial automation systems, allowing to connect field devices with monitoring, supervisory, or control infrastructure.

  • OPC UA enables structured data exchange between industrial equipment and higher-level applications, helping  move information from the shop floor to monitoring platforms or enterprise systems.

  • M-Bus and DLMS support automated data collection from compatible utility meters, reducing the need for manual readings and making consumption data easier to process.


RutOS can also collect information from supported data sources and send it to remote servers through the integrated Data to Server feature. You can select which values to transmit, define how often they are sent, and format the output as JSON or a custom structure. The processed data can then be delivered through supported protocols such as MQTT or HTTP(S), helping you connect field equipment with brokers, cloud platforms, and other data systems while keeping additional hardware to a minimum.


Configure local devices from a single router with Site Manager


Managing hardware at one site often means logging into separate access points and switches to make routine changes. Moving between multiple interfaces takes time, makes troubleshooting less convenient, and increases the chance of inconsistent settings across the network.


Site Manager turns a compatible Teltonika router into a central, on-premises management point. Once enabled, the service scans the local network for supported TAP-series access points and TSW-series switches, allowing you to pair and manage them through the router’s WebUI.

Bringing supported devices into one local dashboard gives you several practical benefits:


  • Centralised configuration lets you adjust network settings, IP addressing, management VLANs, and other supported parameters without opening a separate interface for every device.

  • Unified monitoring gives you a clear view of detected devices, pairing status, firmware status, device names, and MAC addresses from one place.

  • Simplified maintenance allows you to edit settings, reboot devices, and perform firmware upgrades through the same management environment.


Keeping these functions on-site reduces the need to manage every device individually or depend on a cloud platform for routine local administration. You can configure, monitor, and maintain supported equipment through the primary router, making multi-device installations easier to manage and helping keep settings consistent across the site.


Manage your Starlink connection directly through the RutOS WebUI 


Deploying satellite internet in remote or mobile environments often means switching between different applications to check connection health or perform basic troubleshooting. Managing Starlink through a separate mobile app adds another step whenever you need to review performance or control the hardware.


RutOS  software brings supported Starlink monitoring (available under Status → Starlink) and management functions into the router’s WebUI. The dedicated dashboard communicates with the Starlink satellite connections and displays live operational information, including network status, antenna quality, obstruction events, and firmware details. You can review the connection from the same interface used to manage the rest of your network rather than moving between separate tools.

By combining Starlink with a Teltonika router and a cellular connection, you can keep networks and services online with Starlink failover, even when satellite access is temporarily unavailable.


Protect sensitive data with built-in security features 


Default credentials, exposed management services, and overly permissive access rules can increase the risk of unauthorised access. Configuring every security setting manually across a large number of routers also takes valuable time and can lead to inconsistent protection between devices.


RutOS supports secure device administration through features such as HTTPS access, password controls, firewall rules, IP-based restrictions, and attack-prevention functions. You can use these tools to limit access to management services, block unwanted traffic, and reduce exposure to common network threats.


Support for VPN technologies such as OpenVPN, IPsec, and WireGuard allows you to create encrypted connections between devices, remote sites, and central systems. Built-in VPN functionality can reduce the need for separate tunnelling appliances in suitable deployments while giving you several options for securing remote communication.

Security still depends on proper configuration and maintenance. By keeping firmware updated, using strong credentials, limiting administrative access, and disabling services you do not need, you can use RutOS security features as part of a broader network-hardening strategy.


Accelerate large-scale deployments with the RutOS API 


Large-scale networks require an efficient way to configure and manage hundreds or thousands of devices. Repeating the same tasks manually slows down deployment, increases the risk of human error, and makes it harder to maintain consistent settings across every unit.


The RutOS API provides programmatic endpoints for retrieving device data and creating or changing supported service configurations. Control your network from your phone with the RutOS app 


Our software is not limited to fixed industrial installations!


When you are travelling in an RV or staying at a campground, Camper mode in the RutOS app lets you prioritise available campsite Wi-Fi and use a cellular SIM as a backup when the Wi-Fi connection becomes weak or unavailable. You can keep laptops, entertainment systems, cameras, and other devices connected to the router while RutOS manages the change between configured internet sources. Prioritising Wi-Fi can also help you avoid unnecessary cellular data usage when a suitable local connection is available. 



The app also simplifies eSIM provisioning when an eSIM-compatible Teltonika router does not yet have internet access. Your phone connects to the local Wi-Fi network broadcast by the router while continuing to use its own mobile data connection. The app then reaches the eSIM subscription management server through the phone and delivers the operator profile to the router’s embedded SIM.
