No internet on your router? No problem. The Teltonika RutOS app can now download an eSIM profile directly to your Teltonika router using your phone's mobile data as the internet source. You can now fully provision an eSIM-enabled Teltonika router without any pre-existing internet connection on the device itself. As long as you have internet connectivity on your phone, you have everything you need.
How does it work?
The phone connects to the router's local Wi-Fi network, which the router can broadcast even without internet connection of its own. The RutOS app then uses the phone's mobile data to reach the eSIM subscription manager server, which authenticates the device and delivers the operator profile to the router's embedded SIM chip. The phone acts as a temporary bridge, and once the profile has landed, the router manages its own connectivity independently.
Since your phone is usually already in your hand, we made it possible to use it to download an eSIM profile to the Teltonika router in the simplest way possible, - Titas Kutavičius, Head of Mobile Networks Group
This feature removes the most persistent obstacle in eSIM-based deployments: the need for a pre-existing internet connection on the device itself. Industrial monitoring sites, remote agricultural installations, construction cabins, and maritime vessels are all environments where a router may need to go live without any prior connectivity in place. A technician can power up the router, open the app, and walk away with a live, connected device.
How can you activate eSIM profile without internet on your router?
If the router does not yet have internet access, the eSIM profile can be downloaded through your phone’s mobile connection. Here’s how:
Step 1: Update the Teltonika RutOS app. Ensure you are running the latest version, available on the App Store and Google Play.
Step 2: Connect and navigate to Mobile. Connect your phone to the router's Wi-Fi, open the app, and go to the Mobile section. The router will show "SIM status: Not inserted" and "Data connection state: Disconnected."
Step 3: Enable the eSIM toggle. Switch eSIM to on. Go to the eSIM Profiles section and press "+ ADD eSIM" button below the SIM Slots panel.
Step 4: Select your input method. Tap "+ ADD eSIM." A sheet will offer two options: scan a QR code provided by your operator or enter the activation details manually.
Step 5: Enter details and tap Download. Name the profile, enter the activation code, and tap the blue "Download" button. The app will use your phone's mobile data to reach the SM-DP+ server. Do not leave the app until the process is finished.
Step 6: Done. The profile appears under eSIM Profiles with its toggle already active. The router registers on the network automatically, and the status panel updates in real time from "Searching" to your operator’s name, and from "Disconnected" to "Connected."
RutOS app real-life deployment examples
Fast-tracking railway connectivity with 5G router
In railway and public transport deployments, routers are often installed in vehicles before any active internet connection is available. With the RutOS app, a technician can connect to the ATRM50 5G router’s local Wi-Fi and download the eSIM profile using their phone’s mobile data.
It allows the rugged 5G router to be provisioned directly inside a train, tram, bus, or depot environment without relying on physical SIM cards or local infrastructure.
Providing uninterrupted connectivity with a dual-5G router
Temporary event venues, remote construction sites, and mobile command locations often need cellular connectivity before any wired infrastructure is available. By using the Teltonika RutOS application, a technician can download an eSIM profile to the RUTM52 5G router using their phone’s mobile data and bring the router online.
From there, the router’s dual 5G modems, dual SIM, eSIM, and multi-WAN capabilities can provide redundancy, traffic balancing, and automatic failover.
Simplifying large-scale deployments with a 4G router
IoT deployments spread across different regions and mobile networks can quickly turn physical SIM management into a logistical headache. A technician can connect to the RUT241 4G router’s local Wi-Fi and use their phone’s mobile data to download the required eSIM profile on the spot via RutOS app.
Instead of waiting for SIM cards to be shipped, installed, or replaced manually, teams can get compact 4G LTE routers online faster across distributed sites while keeping Wi-Fi and Ethernet available for local device connectivity.
Download the Teltonika RutOS app & try it out yourself
For organisations managing distributed networks across challenging environments, this feature closes the gap between hardware delivery and operational readiness in a single step. It cuts the need for pre-staging, eliminates dependency on local infrastructure, and puts the power of deployment firmly in the hands of the person standing next to the device.
