eSIM Bootstrap: Out-of-the-Box Connectivity for Teltonika eSIM Routers

9 October 2025

Some of the Teltonika devices feature eSIM technology, built directly into the device hardware and managed digitally through GSMA Remote SIM Provisioning. Unlike traditional SIM cards, this embedded approach eliminates the need for physical slots or manual handling. Instead, network operator profiles can be downloaded, switched, and updated remotely, making connectivity fully software driven.

Starting in October 2025, Teltonika is introducing eSIM Bootstrap profiles to its RUT2- and RUT9- eSIM routers.

This enhancement provides reliable connectivity designed for remote-first management from. To activate the eSIM Bootstrap profile instantly, users should access the router through the WebUI, otherwise the connection will establish automatically within an hour. With this feature, Teltonika eSIM routers simplify deployment, minimize downtime, and ensure a seamless start to every installation.

The full range of Teltonika eSIM routers will gradually receive the eSIM Bootstrap feature as part of the ongoing rollout!

Remote management made easy

For IoT solutions with devices scattered across factories, vehicles, or outdoor sites, eSIM technology brings major advantages. Network engineers can provision new profiles, push updates, troubleshoot, or restart routers through RMS, Teltonika’s remote management tool, without ever needing to visit the hardware. It reduces maintenance costs, improves uptime, and makes scaling large deployments far more efficient.

Reliable connectivity & continuous security

The eSIM Bootstrap feature allows you to download the network operator profile without Wi-Fi or a wired internet connection, as long as mobile network coverage is available. In addition to that, the eSIM devices lower the risk of tampering, SIM theft, or unauthorized access, while supporting up to seven profiles simultaneously. These profiles remain encrypted and even if one is deactivated, the device will stay connected without the need for a physical visit to replace the SIM card.

How eSIM Bootstrap Works?

Each bootstrap profile offers 10 MB of data, enough to download a dedicated eSIM profile from your service provider. On startup, it ensures the router can always reach Teltonika’s Remote Management System (RMS) and the SM-DP server, responsible for delivering and managing eSIM profiles.

The bootstrap profile only allows specific traffic such as RMS, DNS, and DHCP, while blocking everything else. Also, if no physical SIM card is detected within the first hour, the router automatically switches to the bootstrap profile to establish connectivity until a network operator profile is downloaded. Once the new profile is active, the system returns to its usual operation.

Why Bootstrap Matters?

Even with multiple advantages, eSIM devices still face a challenge. On first boot, they need a working connection to download their initial profile or to configure it remotely through RMS. Without this, deployment can stall before the device becomes operational.

For industries such as smart cities, utilities, or transportation, where hundreds or thousands of devices must be activated across different regions, bootstrap-enabled eSIM routers make large-scale deployment faster, simpler, and far more reliable.
