- Cellular connectivity in road tax industry
For this case, Teltonika Networks's cellular routers are the best choice, because of security and reliability that it provides. Cellular connectivity in road tax industry SUMMARY According to the leading provider of market and consumer data company – Statista, in 2018 there were more than 24 million commercial vehicles made worldwide. The logistics market is so vast that it is valued more than 5.5 trillion US dollars. Naturally, this incomprehensible scale of vehicles on our roads and motorways is one of the main reasons impacting road maintenance expenditure. Traditionally, the public sector is covering at least part of road maintenance costs with road tax systems. Also, some countries are installing systems that require every, even lightweight car to pay a road tax. CHALLENGE There are multiple ways of how road taxes are being collected, but the two most common ones are barrier control and automatic toll systems. In the case of the barrier control, the car driver must pay after crossing every barrier at a pay toll section. On the other hand, in the case of automatic toll collection, everything is done via the Internet, when a driver purchases electronic vignette for automatic scanners at highways or pays the toll according to actual use recorder by number plate cameras. Both ways require a reliable and secure connection to the Internet. Since most installations are present in remote areas, motorways – ensuring reliable connectivity is a significant challenge, due to expensive cabling works and costly maintenance of wired internet infrastructure. SOLUTION Since the road taxation system requires constant, uninterruptable internet connectivity, generally, any wired Internet infrastructure is backed up by a cellular Internet connectivity option as well. This way, solution architects provide reliable and secure Internet access and remote maintenance. RUTX09 is a professional cellular router that is the perfect solution for road tax systems due to its wide array of features. It is equipped with two SIM cards, which provide uninterruptable internet connectivity in case one cellular data operator suffers service disruptions. - Enabling cold chain traceability with bluetooth
In this use case, we explore how Teltonika Networks RUTX11 dual SIM cellular router in combination with Bluetooth sensors enables cold chain traceability in the food, pharmaceuticals, or cosmetics supply chains. Enabling cold chain traceability with bluetooth SUMMARY The cold chain market is expanding. Since the consumption of cold produce is growing, businesses are looking for improved traceability options, including food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics companies. A good example of the scope of the problem is a global food waste report by the United Nations where it states that over 20% of fresh produce gets lost in the supply chain between harvest and retail. The result? Huge economic, social, and environmental losses. As such, there is a growing interest and efforts in developing sophisticated cold chain traceability technologies. CHALLENGE Should it be food, chemical products, or the new hot topic - vaccine, when the temperature requirements are not met even for a short period, the goods are no longer safe and need to be discarded. As this results in financial losses, the businesses are interested in possibilities to track the supply chain for accountability and prevention reasons. Besides, with products like vaccines, there is a lot more planning involved due to required follow-up doses that are also time-bound. Such goods are also an attractive target for theft or fraud. Tracking the location and movement of them is therefore essential to avoid losing or misplacing the shipment. All of these processes require effective tools and systems in place. SOLUTION Efficient tracking in the supply chain can be ensured by installing Bluetooth sensors on the pallets or the boxes where the products are being transported. Depending on what kind of metrics need to be monitored, there is a choice of ID (for equipment tracking), T (for temperature), or RHT (temperature and humidity) sensors, and others. Up to 200 such sensors can be connected to Teltonika Networks dual SIM RUTX11 cellular router for tracking. The router collects the information from the sensors via Bluetooth and sends it further to the IoT platform via MQTT or HTTPS protocols. The router is equipped with GNSS capabilities, so it can track events happening at an exact specific location. Using the sensor data allows to set up notifications whenever something out of the ordinary occurs. For example, if the temperature falls behind or gets close to a certain measure the system warns the employees and the situation can be rectified to avoid bigger losses. Or an alert may be set up for whenever an object changes its’ location or leaves the premises. In general, GNSS allows to easily trace the goods inside the warehouse or during its’ journey through the whole of the supply chain. TOPOLOGY BENEFITS Reliable connectivity – ensured by dual SIM cellular router with auto-failover and SIM switch capabilities. Simple ecosystem – one RUTX11 can connect up to 200 Bluetooth sensors and the pairing process takes seconds using an NFC enabled device (like a smartphone). Security – since some cold chain products, like pharmaceuticals, are of interest to criminals, the data is secured by professional-level VPNs and industrial-grade protocols. Exact traceability – GNSS service availability on the RUTX11 router allows to track the exact location (or supply chain link) where a certain event occurred. WHY TELTONIKA NETWORKS? Over years of experience working with a variety of partners in different sectors, besides selecting the most compatible and optimized Bluetooth sensors, Teltonika Networks managed to also start partnerships with various top-rated 3rd party IoT platforms for data monitoring. - OUR CELLULAR ROUTERS RECEIVING THE C1D2 CERTIFICATION
The RUT951 and RUT956 of Teltonika Networks have received the C1D2 certification. Read this article to learn more. More News 12/3/2025 RutOS 7.19 firmware update: the latest enhancements 12/3/2025 Teltonika Apps : convenience at your fingertips 11/26/2025 Top IoT Security Risk or Why You Must Update Router Firmware OUR CELLULAR ROUTERS RECEIVING THE C1D2 CERTIFICATION 20 February 2024 Teltonika Networks continues to expand its footprint in the North American market, receiving UL/CSA 62368-1 certifications for three of its cellular routers and C1D2 certifications for two of those three devices. C1D2 marks those devices as safe to use in industrial IoT solutions in environments where flammable and hazardous materials are present. In early June, we announced that several Teltonika Networks cellular routers have received certifications from a number of North American entities. Included among them is the First Responder Network ( FirstNet ), which certifies networking equipment as fit for providing and ensuring connectivity for first responders, disaster response, and emergencies. Not only that, but the RUTM50 , our 5G router tailored-made for the North American market, has very recently been certified by T-Mobile. Today, we’re equally excited to announce two things. First is that the RUT241 , RUT951 , and RUT956 industrial cellular routers have received the UL/CSA 62368-1 certification. The second and more exciting one is that the RUT951 and RUT956 (but not the RUT241) have also received the C1D2 certification, making them safe to use in hazardous environments in North America. What is C1D2? The U.S. National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) classifications of electrical devices that are safe to use in hazardous environments are categorized into classes, divisions, groups, and temperature codes by the NFPA 70 standard. These relate to different hazard risks in industrial environments, with C1D2 in particular standing for Class 1 Division 2 . Class 1 relates to the risk of flammable vapours, gases, or liquids, such as ammonia, propane, ethylene, etc. Division 2 relates to hazardous (i.e. flammable and/or explosive) materials being present in a hazardous environment and potentially posing a risk of leaks, system failures, etc. Having received the C1D2 certification, the RUT951 and RUT956 cellular routers are safe to use in environments where flammable and hazardous materials are present. The RUT951 and RUT956 cellular routers receiving the C1D2 certification opens a new market for Teltonika Networks in North America. Prior to this, it was not possible to deploy our devices in industrial IoT solutions where volatile flammable liquids or gases are handled, processed, or used. However, thanks to this certification, the RUT951 and RUT956 cellular routers can now be deployed in such solutions. This means that industrial IoT solutions installed in oil and gas exploration and production facilities, chemical plants and facilities, refinery operations, mining operations, power generation facilities, petrochemical plants, and more, can safely rely on the RUT951 and RUT956 cellular routers for stellar connectivity. THE CHALLENGE – THE KNIT FOR MORE CLOTHING When we think about the technology and innovation of the human race, we think of incomprehensible webs of data and compact supercomputers that fit in our pockets. But it’s just that – the pocket – that is one of the defining features of our sapience. Or rather, the invention of clothing as a whole. Clothing has been around since before we started recording history, and while its basic premise has changed very little over the years, its production has changed dramatically not too long ago and still needs more changing to adapt to modern-day demand. Why? Simple. Because in the year 0, Earth’s population was approximately 190 million, while in 2022 we are on the precipice of 7.9 billion. The demand for pants has never been higher, and that pushes the textile industry to automate as many of its processes as possible to successfully meet this demand. The good news is that increased automation would not just ensure demand is met, but the industry as a whole will be more efficient and less costly. The bad news is that the sheer number of machines used in the industry is beyond huge, and automation needs network connectivity in order to access all of them from the main server. This calls for a connectivity device suitable for large-scale solutions! THE SOLUTION – AUTOMATED TECH STYLE From the harvesting of cotton to the knitting of that nice sweater you just bought (which looks great on you, by the way!), each machine must accept the gift of IoT and become connected. - Bolstering the Safety of Road Workers
The RUT956 cellular router provides connectivity for remote management of electric road construction signs. Click here to learn how. Bolstering the Safety of Road Workers SUMMARY Picture this: you’re driving on the highway and see a bright electric sign telling you to move to a different lane due to road work up ahead. You signal left, move to the next lane, and pass by the workers performing their job some distance later. They seem safe from incoming traffic. Society sure is working as intended. But wait, who put that warning sign there anyway? Did someone walk into the lane to place it? Wouldn’t they be in serious danger of speeding cars heading their way? That doesn’t sound very safe. CHALLENGE Indeed, the safety of road workers in this type of scenario is not something we often think about, but behind the scenes, a lot of problem-solving is needed to ensure it. To really maximize the safety of road workers, keeping them as far as possible from incoming traffic is priority number one. Any amount of interaction with the electric sign that can be done remotely should be done remotely. This poses a technical challenge. Remote access requires connectivity, but its cellular signal grows weaker the further apart the devices connected to it are. In other words, the further the workers are from the sign, the safer they are, but the harder it becomes for them to access the sign effectively. Safety isn’t something you want to compromise on. Technology should make things simpler and safer for us, after all. Can effective connectivity be established and maintained while still keeping the workers at a safe distance? PARTNERS MCS is a Dutch provider of IoT solutions, services, and products and is one of our distributors. Using its connectivity expertise, it makes complex technologies simple and improves people’s lives and work. EBO van Weel is a Dutch traffic and safety innovator, developing intelligent applications for safe and optimal traffic flow and systems for ensuring safe road work areas. In addition, it’s also a supplier of customizable truck body solutions. SOLUTION When approached by the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management to tackle this problem, EBO came up with an innovative setup. Its basic premise is a full-color display mounted on the back of a road work vehicle visible from half a kilometer away (about one-third of a mile). The display alerts incoming traffic about work being done in a particular part of the road and can start doing so way before it arrives at the worksite, thereby diverting vehicles away on its way there. Workers then carry a mobile device connected to the vehicle management system Autodrip 2.0., with which they can access the sign remotely. Via MCS, EBO chose our RUT956 industrial cellular router and our partner’s antenna, Poynting’s PUCK-5, for optimal connectivity. Combining the uninterrupted connection of the RUT956 with the enhancing signal of the PUCK-5, the workers can manage the sign remotely without needing to come near it, and near the dangers of the open road. TOPOLOGY BENEFITS Equipped with dual SIM and failover functionality, RUT956’s internet connection is stable, reliable, and tailor-made for industrial work. Multiple connectivity options, including RS232 and RS485 interfaces; antenna compatibility, and GNSS functionality make RUT956 a flexible connectivity device for a variety of different applications. A rugged casing, vibration resistance, and the ability to withstand extreme temperatures between -40°C and 75°C make it a reliable role player in pretty much every spot on the planet we would reasonably build a road in. WHY TELTONIKA NETWORKS? According to EBO, you can’t be too critical about connectivity. “Everything stands or falls with the connection. If we have no connection, the system isn’t online.” We gladly accept our clients’ high standards, both because we see them as justified and because we apply them ourselves when designing our products. We’re not in the business of everything falling with the connection. We’re in the business of everything standing with it. LIKE THIS STORY? Share it with friends! Teltonika Remote Management System - an extensive introduction Wednesday, 1 April 2020 at 13:00:00 UTC Register The Remote Management System by Teltonika Networks is one of the most useful tools when it comes to remote monitoring and management of our gateways, routers and devices connected to them.In this upcoming webinar we want to showcase main RMS functionalities and key advantages that significantly save time and operational costs for hundreds of Teltonika Networks partners who use RMS already. SPEAKERS Questions & Answers Can we also set some max communication MB per device that we receive an alert when the limit is reached? Through RMS you can currently set an alert to be sent when certain data usage is reached, although you cannot currently set a mobile data limit. This feature will be added in the future once Multi-config functionality is expanded. Can RMS be used for TRM devices? No, RMS cannot be used with TRM devices. Does RMS support another devices apart from Teltonika to manage? Which ports we will have to open on the firewall so that RMS would able to reach the device? To access a non-Teltonika device you will only need to have an accessible web interface port (for most devices it is 80). What others brand can connect to RMS? You can currently only connect Teltonika devices to RMS, though using the RMS access functionality you can remotely reach the WebUI of non-Teltonika devices that are connected to Teltonika devices. What happens when internet connection interrupts when firmware update is in progress? If your connection gets interrupted while the firmware is being uploaded to the device, the upload will continue the next time the device connects to RMS. If it gets interrupted while the firmware is installing, the firmware will get installed without any issue. When will approximately the RMS connect be available? Q3 or Q4. How can you connect your own device to the RMS? Please check How to Add a New Device to RMS video. Configuration, rules about using the backup SIM. Report about the consumption, let say SIM1 has a credit limit for 10GB and SIM2 has a limit or 5 GB. Currently, using the Multi-config functionality, you can set SIM switching rules for both SIM cards. Also using the Alerts system you can set up a warning when a certain data limit is reached. Though at the moment, you cannot set a data limit, but this will be implemented in the future when we expand the Multi-config functionality. It is possible have multiple RMS Accounts managing the same Routers? Yes. One RMS company can have an unlimited amount of users. There are also multiple different roles, which can limit certain features. Do you plan to release a virtual VPN service on top of RMS to access all devices connected to router LAN not only for HTTP/HTTPS traffic? If so, when is it scheduled? This type of functionality will be introduced with RMS Connect, which is planned to release Q3-Q4 2020. How can I access a non Teltonika device via the RMS like showed in the demo? Please check this link . What kind of features will the RMS API contain after the first release? It will contain accessibility to all data collected from devices, as well as all exports available from RMS (backup configuration, event logs, troubleshoot). How much data/megabytes logs generate per day? Also, can offline-logs be uploaded after an outage? How much data is generated and how often, is configurable through RMS, you are able to choose which parameters are sent to RMS. RMS does not gather data from offline devices. Even though RMS doesn't need public IP of Teltonika for registration, but I think if we need port forward for a Teltonika device, internet provider will need to provide sim card's public IP address, right? Devices connect to a public network and only need to have an internet connection to connect to RMS. No public IP is needed. Is there an API to interface RMS with other solutions? RMS API functionality will be introduced in April. How much data does one router take (per month), when it communicates with RMS servers - roughly? By default, without changing how often information gets updated, RMS uses ~3.54 MB down / 8.44 MB up There is the device map. Why don't I see all devices (in my case all of them RUT950), which are online in the device map. I can only see a subset of them - 11 of 14 online. Your carrier GSM towers may have not yet updated your device location. If the devices in question still do not show up on the map, you can individually set each device location. Will there be a Teltonika MQTT protocol description available anytime soon? Contact your sales manager from Teltonika and we will send a protocol description. If a PLC it is connected to a Teltonika router, it is possible to access it? Or it can access only other routers? If the PLC in question has a web interface, you can access it using RMS. You mentioned that there is no need for public IP address. How? Devices connect to a public network and only need to have an internet connection to connect to RMS. Any devices will work with RMS? Only Teltonika routers and gateways can be managed by RMS solution. How do we configure non-Teltonika devices to appear in RMS web interface? At the moment you cannot configure non-Teltonika devices to appear in RMS device list. Is it possible to run the RMS on a separate server? We plan to operate many Teltonika devices with our own APN without access to the Internet. Yes, RMS has a local version which can be run on a separate server. How is the WebUI redirect configured? Is there an automatic detection of the local WebUI? Teltonika device WebUI is detected automatically, while non-Teltonika device web interfaces are found by the given port while setting up the RMS access rules. Can we set RMS access link time limit to 'unlimited'? Yes When using multi-config, and devices are offline, will the selected actions be performed, when devices come back online? If yes, what is the timeout period? At the moment you cannot use multi-config on offline devices, though this will be implemented in the future. Can you set a hard data cap (Eg. 200MB download per day)? In the future, you will be able to use Multi-config to set a mobile data cap for each device. Is there any kind of automatic rollback in case you make a configuration mistake? Example - if you make a change that results in losing a connection between RMS and the device, will the device recognize that and load previous settings after some time? RMS does not currently have this functionality. Devices will keep trying to connect to RMS, though if the device does not have an internet connection, it will not connect to RMS. Is it possible to set a permanent link in RMS to a non-Teltonika device? Yes. For the devices Map, if the RUT does not have GPS or cannot get a location, does the Map locate using Cellular Location Technologies, CELLID, RSSI, Timings etc.? Yes. What will happen if I am updating firmware of 100 devices and suddenly there is no power or no internet for 2-5 units? All offline devices will be updated when they connect again to the server. Firmware update means to configure all devices from the beginning? So, if FW update will reset the devices to default? By default, if you update to a newer firmware version, all settings will remain unchanged, though updating to an older version will reset all settings. Is there an API for RMS, to be able to configure/monitor the devices from external systems? In April we will introduce RMS API functionality. The password manager, is it like password access management? Using the Password management functionality you can change passwords for selected devices to either a single password you type in or individually randomly generated passwords. You can also set password for all your devices using a CSV file. Will the routers be able to get the unique/true MAC address of the device even if MAC address randomization is enabled? Yes How do I buy a license for RMS? More information about license purchaces you can find in RMS where to buy section. Alert on e-mail? Yes, you can get email alerts. SMS/Email alert will come from SIM card of the router or from RMS web? SMS alerts will be sent from the router SIM card, Email alerts will be sent from RMS. Device configuration: can we configure the SSID / Hotspot / LAN / or only 'MOBILE, SIM Management, SMS Limit'? In the future we will be expanding the Multi-config functionality to include your mentioned features, though at the moment you can only configure mobile settings. For how many days license will be valid? Now it is called a credit, but validation will be the same – 30 days. Is it possible to get remote access to the shell of the non Teltonika unit? Not at the moment, though this functionality will be available with RMS Connect. Can reports be automated and sent to a specific e-mail? Yes. Can we download system logs out of Teltonika devices (which work with RMS) by using RMS? Yes. Let’s say I have PLC connected to one of the routers. And PLC is receiving some data from sensors. Can I see that data on RMS? Yes, if the data in question is sent via MQTT. RMS requires credits for managing devices. Can I move credits applied on a device to another? No, once a credit is used it cannot be moved to another device. In other words, one credit is strictly for one device for one month Can RMS check reports/logs for a specified time/day range e.g Monday thru Friday? Yes you can do that with RMS. Any plan to support Teltonika's modems with RMS? We currently do not have this feature planned. Can we collect some user data on RMS? We do not collect user data in RMS. Can you forward any other protocols such as SSH or VNC viewer to access other devices behind the router? In the future will introduce the RMS connect functionality which will let you access SSH, VNC, RDP protocols. Any plan to offer CoAP based protocol as alternative to MQTT? It is planned in the future. Is the out of band management only available on Cisco ISR? It is available for other routers, not just Cisco. Do you have plans for VPN in RMS? VPN functionality will be introduced with RMS Connect. Will you have an option to see GPIO data from RUT955 or TRB141 in the future? You can already see GPIO data in RMS for all supported devices. Can login screen be also “white labeled”? If by “white labeled” you mean re-branded to your company, then yes, you can purchase a re-branded RMS version. So we can request RMS to use our company name as well as our client name, yes? Yes. Can I write for example python script and use RS485 to work with my program, for example query for our device status and send server? You can do that with the RMS sensor functionality which will be introduced in the future. Is the data accessible for different Business Intelligence systems, like Microsoft PowerBI? It is possible to send data from router to Microsoft IoT Hub. If it is possible to access Microsoft IoT Hub data from Microsoft PowerBI, you can access it that way. Are the safety certificates available on your website? You can get a copy of our safety certificates by contacting your Teltonika sales manager. Is the RMS local hardware also running on Azure? Yes.
