  • Drive through testing

As the world is facing a pandemic crisis, the tools chosen to help in this fight must be reliable and secure, ensuring fast to deploy mission-critical connectivity. Drive through testing SUMMARY At the beginning of 2020, we have heard rumors that there is a virus, which can cause chaos in the world. Many people did not believe that; however, everything changed rather quickly as the number of cases rose. Now, the world is dealing with a massive crisis, called COVID-19, in all the ways possible. Each country has its unique strategies, but the most common initiatives include quarantine, travel ban, and social distancing. Non-essential businesses are shutting down or continue working from home, schools and universities are, medical employees are standing in the front line. CHALLENGE Because finding out about new virus cases is essential for managing the healthcare system, countries have established drive-through testing posts. They are beneficial because they require as little contact between the public and medical employees as possible. It works pretty simply. Cities are choosing the right spot and deploying the temporary site, in which there‘s a medical booth with employees. The people, who think that they might be infected, drive with a car to the booth where the medical staff takes the details, registers the person, takes a sample, and stores it for later delivery to the lab. However, it is a bit more challenging to deploy such a solution quickly. To register the person that is being tested, the testing staff must have reliable connectivity to the Internet because they must input his or her data into the medical case registration system. The connectivity must also be secure to protect personal data and ensure there are no threats of anyone accessing medical databases. To summarize, amongst other logistical challenges, deploying drive-through testing facilities requires secure and reliable Internet connectivity that must be deployed immediately. SOLUTION Apart from connection security & reliability, the essential solution features are ease of set-up and speed of deployment. In this particular application, RUTX11 plays an important role. This professional cellular router is used to provide Internet connectivity through 4G LTE by sharing it using Dual-Band Wi-Fi (2.4 & 5Ghz). On-site medical staff can register patient details using a wireless connection and ensure they forwarded to the medical case registration system, so their sample can be delivered to the lab and followed up if necessary. Also, the same RUTX11 can be connected directly to CCTV cameras or the Network Video Recorder (NVR) using Gigabit Ethernet interfaces. It is worth mentioning that this cellular router comes with Dual SIM functionality with an auto-failover feature, which means that you can set-up your connection to switch to a backup cellular provider if the primary one fails. Finally, all our routers are equipped with multiple VPN options and firewall for security. As mentioned before, the speed of deployment is crucial, but also is the ability to configure and set-up the temporary network over-the-air. RUTX11 complies with both of the requirements with the help of Teltonika RMS cloud platform. It allows the device to be preconfigured or configured remotely, so the medical teams don’t need to worry about any set-up or come into contact with any unnecessary technical staff. TOPOLOGY BENEFITS Fast deployment – RUTX11 is fast to set up and easy to use, it is ideal for professional temporary network deployments. Fast connection – With 4G LTE Cat6, this device is capable of speeds up to 300Mbps, which is more than sufficient to support both CCTV and case registration activities in the drive-though virus testing facility. Remote set-up & management – with Teltonika RMS, the router can be set-up and configured over the air to comply with all security requirements to satisfy internal medical systems for case registration. WHY TELTONIKA NETWORKS? As the world is facing a pandemic crisis, the tools chosen to help in this fight must be reliable and secure, ensuring fast to deploy mission-critical connectivity. • Mobile vaccination units

In this use case, we present how mobile vaccination units with cellular connectivity provided by Teltonika Networks dual SIM RUTX11 router can speed up the vaccination and help reach people in remote locations. Mobile vaccination units SUMMARY The invention of not even one but several vaccines against Covid-19 was among the greatest highlights of 2020. The vaccine is the safest and most effective measure of controlling the virus and ending the pandemic. Around 70% of the population needs to become immunized to reach the desired effect. However, although it took less than 12 months to develop the vaccine, it may take longer to complete the vaccination. The process is not progressing as quickly as desired. The challenges are many, including factors like high numbers of patients requiring hospitalization, lack of infrastructure needed to start the vaccination quickly and efficiently, and limited access to people living in remote or rural areas. CHALLENGE Since vaccinating in the hospitals is not an option at this moment, the governments are looking for efficient ways to establish temporary vaccination sites. However, the setting up process is challenging because of a few reasons. Usually, these locations are not suited for similar purposes and take quite a while to get up and running. Also, their availability is limited and it is hard to reach them for non-city residents, especially elderly people. Due to troubled accessibility, the vaccination is slowed down and the planning becomes inefficient, which sometimes results in discarded unused vaccines. TOPOLOGY SOLUTION Setting up mobile vaccination units is an efficient method, helping to speed up the overall process by enhancing accessibility to the public. The principle is very similar to the drive-through testing posts. The unit can be quickly set up almost anywhere, even in rural areas, and it requires very low resources on staff. The mobile vaccination unit includes thermal access control for measuring the temperature of patients and granting or denying access based on the result. Automating this step lowers the risk for the employees as it reduces contact with potentially infected people. The data from the control unit is sent to the medical database and shared with the reception desk and the medical staff. All of these devices get connected to the network by the RUTX11 - LTE Cat 6 cellular router providing wired and wireless connectivity and ensuring network redundancy with dual SIM functionality. Since the vaccines are highly sensitive to changes in temperature, BLE sensors are installed in the freezer and communicate with the router through Bluetooth. The router sends the data to the Medical IoT platform via the MQTT protocol. An alert is set up to notify the staff whenever there are any changes in the temperature metrics. This way the chances are minimized that such changes could affect the quality of the vaccine. BENEFITS Quick deployment using a single device - RUTX11, which suffices all the connectivity needs. Mobility of this solution allows to relocate it within a matter of hours. Reliability ensured by dual SIM with auto-failover and backup WAN. Security of data provided by Firewall, multiple VPN options, Web Filter, and Access Control. Easy setup ensured by a small ecosystem of the solution, using wired and wireless connectivity for devices, and the Bluetooth to connect the sensors straight to the router. Scalability allows to quickly set up multiple mobile vaccination sites in locations where they are needed the most, especially remote areas with people having limited accessibility. WHY TELTONIKA NETWORKS? Teltonika Networks has been developing professional networking equipment for over decades now and has long-standing experience in a variety of sectors, including medical. Understanding the nature of the solution, we can offer a product that meets the essential requirements of this solution, like top-level data security, quick deployment, easy set-up, and mobility. Such a setting would not have an IT professional present; therefore, it is essential that it would be simple to use for every member of the staff and would not require any special training. However, if any IT issues would occur, they could be conveniently resolved remotely by using Teltonika Networks Remote Management System (RMS). Interested in more use cases like this? • Cellular router for FirstNet lift station remote monitoring

This networking solution enables remote monitoring and management in lift stations across the U.S. via FirstNet. Click here to read more. CELLULAR ROUTER FOR FIRSTNET LIFT STATION REMOTE MONITORING Highlights ✔ LEC is a U.S.-based automation and integration specialist dedicated to providing its clients with industrial automation, control engineering, and industrial IoT enablement and cloud platform services of the highest quality. ✔ Its iQ2 remote management tool provides IoT remote monitoring and management capabilities to lift stations across the U.S. by transmitting critical data through the FirstNet cellular network to the iQ2 platform, allowing for quick response to alarms. ✔ This data transmission requires a reliable, FirstNet-certified 4G LTE router – the RUT956. This cellular router checks all the boxes by providing this solution with seamless, uninterrupted connectivity, interface versatility, and support of a wide range of industrial protocols. The challenge – the last responders of lift stations Across the United States are over 2 million sewer lift stations transporting wastewater from a lower level to a higher one, enabling continuous water flow with the help of good, old-fashioned gravity. To achieve this, sewer lift stations utilise a combination of float switches, lift station pumps, and a wet well where the wastewater is collected. An above-ground control panel is then installed for on-site management of the station. These lift stations are incredibly important infrastructure, particularly in the event of a natural disaster, such as a hurricane or a flash flood. In spite of this, the monitoring practices of these stations often range from subpar to outright outdated. Common examples include a flashing red light or an audible alarm that must be detected and reported by on-site personnel or a routine drive-by before any further action can be taken. This means that, in practice, these alarm signals can and do go unnoticed for some time. Given the importance of lift stations functioning properly at all times, a lack of 24/7 monitoring is a disaster waiting to happen. This is where FirstNet enters the picture. FirstNet is a U.S. authority meant to establish, operate, and maintain an interoperable public safety broadband network. In other words – to provide and ensure connectivity for first responders, disaster response, and emergencies. To connect sewer lift stations across the U.S. to the FirstNet cellular network and enable IoT remote monitoring and management capabilities in line with Industry 4.0 standards, our partners at LEC created the iQ2 lift station remote management tool. Their solution required a reliable, FirstNet-certified cellular router to ensure uninterrupted connectivity to the FirstNet network. Teltonika Networks had the perfect device for the job: the RUT956 4G LTE router. Topology The solution – lifting your station to FirstNet The Teltonika Networks RUT956 cellular router is a reliable and versatile networking device that makes the iQ2 remote management tool tick with seamless uninterrupted connectivity. This 4G router is connected to the iQ2 control panel via Ethernet. The control panel is connected to the different parts within the wet well, such as the float-level switches and lift station pumps, and receives signals like float and motor status from them. These signals are then transmitted through the RUT956 via the Modbus TCP protocol and are held in an internal LEC database. At user-defined intervals, the data collected via Modbus TCP is transmitted through the FirstNet cellular network to LEC’s iQ2 platform using the MQTT protocol – the golden standard for IoT remote monitoring. The user can then view the data and control all lift station operations remotely, with a push of a button, from anywhere in the world. If an alarm does go off for any reason, it will be detected and responded to quickly, ensuring the lift station functions properly at all times. A number of key features make the RUT956 an excellent choice for this solution. Its interface versatility and support of a wide range of industrial protocols, including the MQTT protocol and Modbus TCP, make it easy to slot the 4G router into iQ2 control panels while also future-proofing the solution for potential upgrades at a later point. This cellular router not only provides seamless connectivity, but ensures an uninterrupted connection thanks to having dual SIM slots, auto-failover, backup WAN, and other switching scenarios. This level of connection safeguarding is exactly what a networking solution connected to the FirstNet network needs. In addition, the RUT956 is easy to integrate into an IoT remote monitoring solution. It features GNSS capabilities for effective device tracking and is compatible with the Remote Management System (RMS) of Teltonika Networks, meaning that integration with LEC’s iQ2 platform is simple by design. Lastly, this cellular router was engineered for adverse industrial environments. Protected by sturdy aluminium housing and capable of withstanding vibrations and extreme temperatures from -40 °C to 75 °C, the RUT956 will perform in just about any environment a sewer lift station can be installed in. If you’re in the market for a FirstNet-certified cellular router for your lift station solution, the RUT956 of Teltonika Networks is your IoT dream come true. LIKE THIS STORY? Share it with friends! • Industrial IoT gateway for smart grid communication

Smart grids offer efficient monitoring and management of energy grid operations. Find out the best networking device for enabling them. INDUSTRIAL IOT GATEWAY FOR SMART GRID COMMUNICATION Highlights ✔ Smart grids offer efficient monitoring and management of energy grid operations. To achieve this, energy grid modernisation requires a reliable networking device capable of keeping the network simple by supporting different interfaces and protocols used by legacy equipment. ✔ The perfect device for this job is the TRB142 cellular gateway by Teltonika Networks. This IoT gateway comes with the widely-used RS232 serial interface and supports a host of critical industrial protocols, including Modbus RTU, MQTT, DHCP, SNMP, and DNP3. ✔ In addition, this compact and affordable IoT gateway supports 4G, 3G, and 2G technologies, is compatible with RMS for enhanced remote access and management capabilities, and ensures easy deployment, installation, and scalability. The challenge – entropy in smart grids At its core, energy infrastructure revolves around production and transmission. Energy is generated and then transmitted to energy grids via high, medium, and low-voltage stations and substations. From there, energy grids reach homes and businesses around the world, allowing you to read these very words. This is a complex, multistep process, so ensuring the health of this infrastructure and the efficiency of each step is of vital importance. Doing so requires continuous monitoring and control of the system, which in turn requires all its moving parts to be connected to an IoT network. In practice, this isn’t always the case. Station networks are managed by engineers and advanced supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, while the substation networks are managed by the substation controller. In other words – division instead of cohesion. To enable smart grid technology, which is to say – a cohesive energy grid constituting a single IoT network, each substation network must be connected to the greater, station network. This means the grid network grows in volume, its scale of automation increases – and a smart grid is born. But alas, the 2 nd law of thermodynamics states that in an isolated system, entropy can only increase. In the realm of IoT-powered smart grids, this entropy manifests in the inevitable downtime of the system. The larger the network, the more this entropic downtime negatively impacts its overall performance and reliability. Downtime cannot be entirely avoided, but it can definitely be minimized. The problem is that substations employ different legacy equipment. An optimised network should simplify communication to these legacy equipment and maintain as stable and seamless a connection as possible. Topology The solution – smart grid IoT gateway Many keyholes require many keys, but a single keyring is all it takes to stay efficient. In this case, the keyring is the TRB142 cellular gateway by Teltonika Networks. Taking the example of an electric power grid, this industrial gateway can connect to the substation controller via a supported protocol such as Modbus RTU and to the SCADA control centre via a wireless connection. The TRB142 comes with the widely-used RS232 serial interface and supports a host of critical industrial protocols, including the aforementioned Modbus RTU (Server), as well as MQTT, DHCP, SNMP, and DNP3. This comprehensive protocol support reduces the complexity of smart grid infrastructure and enhances the smart grid network by reducing the need for additional cabling and auxiliary devices and adapters. In terms of connectivity, this affordable industrial IoT gateway features LTE Cat 1, the ideal 4G category for serial interface communication where low data speeds are more than sufficient. If need be, the TRB142 also supports 3G and 2G technologies. The nature of smart grids demands environmental resilience from all hardware, and the TRB142 doesn’t disappoint on that front either. This IoT gateway is housed in an aluminium casing and can withstand harsh industrial environments. In addition, the device measures only 74.5 x 25 x 64.4 mm and can be installed on a DIN rail both bottom and sideways, making installation easy and scalability simple. Last but far from least, this IoT gateway is compatible with the Remote Management System (RMS) of Teltonika Networks. RMS enables seamless remote access and management capabilities, including a fully custom alerts and automation schemes. The TRB142 is the perfect networking device for smart grid communication. Don’t let your grid stay in an inefficient past; deploy this IoT gateway and get your IoT energy grid modernisation started. LIKE THIS STORY? Share it with friends! The challenge – ensuring real-time insights & remote management Aquaculture is one of the world’s fastest-growing food production sectors, supplying more than half of all fish consumed globally. But despite its rapid growth, the industry faces a costly and persistent obstacle: sea lice. These parasites weaken fish, reduce yields, and are responsible for massive financial losses across the sector. It is estimated that fish farmers spend more than $1 billion every year on sea lice treatments alone – without even accounting for the additional losses caused by reduced growth, higher mortality rates, and stricter environmental regulations. For fish farmers, this creates an urgent need for effective, sustainable, and non-disruptive lice control solutions. Traditional methods, such as chemical baths, thermal or freshwater treatments, and mechanical removal, are expensive, labour-intensive, and often come with negative impacts on fish welfare and the surrounding environment. Stingray Marine Solutions AS , a Norwegian company pioneering innovative technologies for aquaculture, aimed to break this cycle by introducing a continuous, precise, and environmentally friendly approach. Combining machine vision with advanced laser technology, their system continuously scans fish in pens, monitors well-being, and eliminates lice, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional methods. Only with uninterrupted access to real-time data and remote operations could fish farmers and analysts effectively monitor stocks, respond swiftly, and reduce the staggering economic burden caused by lice. So, to make such an innovation possible, reliable connectivity was essential. Topology The solution – 4G router made for continuous connectivity Delivering continuous, precise, and environmentally friendly lice control required a system built around three interconnected elements: the Node Cabinet, providing Internet to the whole system, the Submerged Unit for scanning and laser treatment, and the Buoyant Unit that positions the Submerged Unit within the pen.
