  • Uninterrupted Connectivity In Desert Race

The RUT956 cellular router provided connectivity for the Sonnenwagen team in the 2021 Solar Challenge Morocco race. Click here to learn how. UNINTERRUPTED INTERNET CONNECTIVITY IN DESERT RACE SUMMARY Just as Rome wasn’t built in a day, no great technological advancement was made without research and development. A group of German students has created a solar-powered car to enter into races all over the world, where they prove their concept and gather data to further improve their technology. Connectivity becomes a big part of the race and has significant influence on the end result. CHALLENGE Team Sonnenwagen entered their latest electric, solar-powered car, Covestro Photon, into the Solar Challenge Morocco 2021 race. Although, the race car was not the only one on the road as a supporting convoy always followed suit. One of the supporting cars is dedicated to the driving strategy team. Their role in the race is to relay important information to the solar car driver to proceed without any problems. The racecourse stretches throughout mountains, deserts and unpopulated areas. This race layout makes having a good internet connection quite challenging. Without it, the team cannot access weather and location data and other important information. The team needed to ensure somehow that the convoy had uninterrupted access to the internet. And to top it all off, the car was constantly moving. PARTNER Sonnenwagen is a team founded by German students of RWTH Aachen University and FH Aachen. Their goal is to help build a more sustainable future where solar energy and mobility go hand in hand. To achieve their target, Sonnenwagen bi-annually participates in Solar Challenges worldwide. Since 2015 they have developed three solar race cars. Each model is more advanced than the last one and has fewer faults in entering the most demanding solar car races. SOLUTION The Sonnenwagen team used Teltonika Networks RUT956 industrial cellular router with the COMBO MIMO Mobile/GNSS/Wi-Fi Roof SMA antenna . This IoT solution ensured that the support team had an interrupted internet connection, which they used to acquire accurate weather data. Then the information was relayed to the solar car driver, and the route adjusted accordingly, as solar panels can't charge without sunlight. The dual SIM with a failover allowed RUT956 to provide constant and stable internet access even in remote areas. A GNSS receiver was also connected to the router and a Sonnenwagen server. These features enabled continuous geographical tracking of the team and processing all the received data. The Sonnenwagen team first tested the router extensively and only after passing with flying colors was it installed in the Strategy Car. Moreover, RUT956 runs on RutOS, an open-source operating system that lets anyone to adapt it with their specific requirements. The team could easily integrate their API and have complete access to the router system. Thanks to this compatibility, they could constantly monitor temperature, connection status and retrieve warnings if something didn’t look right. TOPOLOGY BENEFITS RutOS allows integrating a custom API that can gather critical diagnostic data. RUT956 provides reliable cellular connectivity thanks to dual SIM and failover functionality. RUT956 router can easily integrate with other products like antennas to further increase the strength of the internet connection signal. The router can easily withstand high temperatures, vital for working in desert conditions. RUT956 has an E-mark certificate, that allows it to be used in vehicles. WHY TELTONIKA NETWORKS? According to Sonnenwagen, “Having a solution that allowed the team to establish a server inside the Strategy Car and have a stable internet connection at any time, any condition and anywhere, especially in the desert, was crucial for the race. For this reason, Sonnenwagen chose Teltonika Networks as it is well-known for its stable and reliable networking connections.” LIKE THIS STORY? Share it with friends! • Investigating the Cumbre Vieja Eruption With IoT Connectivity

A group of researchers created a bubble-looking instrument consisting of our TRB245 cellular gateway, which enabled reliable seawater status collection remotely. INVESTIGATING THE CUMBRE VIEJA ERUPTION WITH IoT CONNECTIVITY HIGHLIGHTS ✔ The devastating effects of the 2021 Cumbre Vieja volcanic eruption in Las Palmas caused colossal damages, not only for the island's ecosystem but also for the surrounding seawater. However, the full extent of the damage was unknown. ✔ A group of researchers from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, BarcelonaTech , Spain, were asked to investigate the effects of this volcanic eruption on the island’s surrounding seawater. The group created a bubble-looking instrument consisting of our TRB245 cellular gateway, which enabled reliable seawater status collection remotely. ✔ Apart from robust connectivity, features like compact design, low power consumption, and ease of use have made the solution as convenient and efficient as possible. THE PROBLEM – VOLCANIC PANIC While volcanoes can be mesmerizing, there is a very fine line between captivating and catastrophic. One eruption can potentially wipe out an entire local ecosystem with its waves of lava, endangering not just nature, but also the animals and people living in it. Unfortunately, with one eruption per week worldwide, such a disaster occurred on the Spanish island of La Palma in 2021 . This volcanic eruption lasted for a record-breaking 85 days from September to December and caused colossal financial damages . From the devastating impact on the lives of every citizen of the island to its nature – it seemed that every living organism suffered. But what about the waters surrounding the island? This was the question posed to the scientists and students of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, the largest engineering university in Catalonia, Spain. To answer this question, a group of researchers was dispatched to the site with the aim of observing the consequences of the volcano's eruption on the surrounding seawater. For this to be evaluated, measurements of water quality, currents, and temperature changes had to be continuously sent to the on-ground station for measurements and data logging. However, retrieving data from equipment was often complicated or even impossible. This is due to the equipment being placed in a sphere on the surface of the water, and having a tendency to drift with the sea’s currents. The group of researchers knew that network connectivity support for the entire system was the answer to the issue of the sphere’s unpredictable drifting, yet they still needed to identify the most suitable networking device for their needs. Luckily, they stumbled upon our device portfolio and found the perfect option. TOPOLOGY THE SOLUTION – THE CONNECTIVITY WAVES PROVIDE THE DATA Once the researchers got acquainted with our TRB245 M2M gateway, they were able to dot all the I’s and cross all the T’s and make their solution reliable, convenient, and efficient. Or in other words, work swimmingly . The TRB245 helped the researchers achieve their goal in three ways: cellular connectivity, compactness, and ease of use. The most essential requirement for this solution was to overcome the accessibility issue caused by the equipment’s drift and ensure the collected data is continuously transmitted in real-time. This was a piece of cake with our TRB245 gateway thanks to its LTE Cat 4 connectivity. With cellular connectivity in check, the equipment inside the sphere, like sensors for water temperature and a gyroscope for measuring waves and currents, attained robust access to the Internet and was able to send the data to the on-ground station in real-time. Consequently, the researchers could release the solution into the sea without worrying about the strength of the network connection and continuity of live data. All measuring instruments were connected to the TRB245, enabling each to receive network connectivity and thus send all collected data of water quality, currents, and temperature changes to the on-ground station. In cases where the sphere ended up in locations with no GSM coverage, an IRIDIUM gateway and satellite connection were used as a preemptive measure to ensure the continuous monitoring of seawater wouldn’t get disrupted. For this to work, the IRIDIUM gateway was connected to the TRB245 via Ethernet. Our gateways are well-known for their remarkable compactness, and that includes the TRB245. This gateway is small in size and weight, making it easily applicable in space-limited scenarios like this sphere! Also, the gateway’s power consumption ranges from <1.2 W to <5 W, which is significant because the entire solution must be powered by a battery. The TRB245’s ease of use makes every step of the instrument’s setup easy and convenient, as its configurations require no particular know-how in the networking field. All of these features ensure that researchers can effectively track and log the required seawater parameters. And as a result, these parameters allow them to continue their studies on the effects of the Cumbre Vieja eruption on the island's surrounding seawater. LIKE THIS STORY? Share it with friends! The challenge – smart farming and the world of tomorrow Without a doubt, the future of agriculture is smart . In a nutshell, smart farming is the application of IoT, AI, and automation in the agriculture sector. Its global market size was $13.06 billion in 2022 and is expected to grow to $14.69 billion in 2023, at a CAGR of 12.5%. Clearly, this growth will only increase in the coming years. A major factor of this growth is the exponential adoption of 5G technology for IoT in agriculture. This technology provides the high bandwidth and low latency necessary for real-time communication between smart equipment, such as farming tractors, and the 5G network. In turn, these allow a greater number of tractors to operate autonomously across a wide coverage area, while also making any remote operations simple, reliable, and secure. These aren’t theoretical ideas of innovation, but very real IoT systems enhancing the yields and efficiency of smart farms all over North America this very moment – all while reducing operational costs. If your farm hasn’t made the jump to 5G yet, it’s bound to be outcompeted sooner rather than later. Of course, at the core of this infrastructure is a heart of connectivity that keeps all smart equipment connected and data flowing seamlessly. The choice of networking device is a critical one, and Teltonika Networks has the perfect device for the job: the RUTM50 5G router. Topology The solution – the RUTM50 5G router RUTM50 is an FCC-certified 5G cellular router tailor-made for the North American market. It features ultra-high cellular speeds of up to 3.4 Gbps and supports both SA and NSA 5G architectures. Once installed inside the tractor’s cab or on its roof, this 5G router connects to the farming tractor’s main controller via an Ethernet connection. The controller is then connected to a wide range of smart devices that enable the tractor to operate autonomously and efficiently. Among those devices are hydraulic and electric actuators for powering and controlling the plow, crop sprayers, and other parts of the tractor; soil and weather sensors for assessing environmental conditions out in the field; and devices for detecting obstacles and avoiding collision, including GNSS and INS systems, radar and lidar systems, ultrasonic sensors, and a camera. Using all of these devices, the tractor creates a model of its environment and plans a safe and efficient path to follow autonomously. If manual planning or operation is needed for any reason, such as unexpected hardware failure, the RUTM50’s Wi-Fi capabilities allow for seamless remote operation. By facilitating communication between tractors, the RUTM50 enables more efficient fleet management. You can even enhance this communication using a dedicated 5G MIMO antenna . Of course, to truly manage your fleet of smart farming tractors with peak efficiency, you want to take advantage of this 5G router’s support of the NTRIP protocol. This enables the router to relay RTK correction data between the tractor’s controller with a built-in RTK receiver and the NTRIP server. As a result, the tractor receives its exact location and can precisely maneuver and control its agricultural implements. The way it works is that the tractor’s controller, equipped with an RTK receiver, requests RTK corrections from the NTRIP server. The server processes this request and sends back the necessary data. The controller then uses these corrections to determine and display its precise location, enabling the tractor to operate effectively in the fields without human supervision. The connectivity of this holistic IoT system must also be maintained at all times, so ensuring uninterrupted connectivity is a must. This is why this 5G router comes with auto-failover, backup WAN, and other switching scenarios for ensuring uninterrupted connectivity. Even in areas where 5G isn’t fully-supported, the RUTM50 is backward-compatible with 4G, and will simply switch to LTE Cat 19 to ensure stable connectivity. All of these features are housed in a compact and sturdy aluminum casing weighing only 519 grams. This housing offers resistance to vibrations and extreme temperatures between -40 °C to 75 °C, making it ideal for environmental conditions synonymous with agriculture. Last but not least, this 5G router is easily installed thanks to its DIN rail mounting, which is possible on both sides of the device. All in all, the RUTM50 delivers the connectivity autonomous farming tractors need and helps elevate smart farming to the competitive environment of tomorrow. LIKE THIS STORY? Share it with friends!
