- What Do RSSI & RSRP Mean in Your Network Setup?
Learn what RSSI and RSRP mean in the context of wireless connections and their importance for your solution’s performance. More News 12/3/2025 RutOS 7.19 firmware update: the latest enhancements 12/3/2025 Teltonika Apps : convenience at your fingertips 11/26/2025 Top IoT Security Risk or Why You Must Update Router Firmware What Do RSSI & RSRP Mean in Your Network Setup? 19 March 2024 Teltonika Networks devices with wireless connection support display RSSI and RSRP signal strength, enabling you to obtain better control and understanding of your networking solution’s performance. Familiarise yourself with these metrics to enhance your next steps. Once, wired connections held dominance in IoT applications, but it’s evident that wireless networks are becoming the preferred choice for IoT connectivity. Currently, prevailing networking solutions largely depend on Wi-Fi or mobile networks – a trend that’s expected to rise as the wireless connectivity market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 12.8% in the next three years . This isn’t surprising at all, given the versatility and convenience offered by wireless connectivity. Freed from the limitations of physical wiring, you can efficiently manage, monitor, and even configure network devices remotely, regardless of whether they’re located in a different city, country, or continent. On top of that, wireless technology enables the improvement of Internet coverage and resilience without necessitating permanent alterations to the network device’s location or the existing network setup. So, you see, the benefits of wireless connection are indisputable. The primary wireless connectivity options include Wi-Fi and mobile technologies. Wi-Fi operates on the IEEE 802.11 standard, supporting multiple protocols like 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n, and 802.11ac, which determine the connection’s speed and range. Meanwhile, mobile technologies have evolved from 3G to 4G and now to 5G, each of them also defining the connection’s speed and capacity available to users. WHERE DO RSSI & RSRP COME IN, THEN? When checking out your network device that operates on Wi-Fi or mobile technologies, you’ll inevitably be stumbling upon the terms RSSI and RSRP. Fairly so, as these play a crucial role in displaying each connection’s strength and power. What is RSSI? RSSI stands for received signal strength indicator . It measures radio frequency power and quality at the moment it reaches the receiver, such as an antenna or a network device. RSSI signal strength is not exclusive to any particular wireless technology, meaning that RSSI can be used to gauge the signal strength in any wireless system. RSSI provides data on received signal strength across different types of radio frequency communications, including both Wi-Fi and mobile technologies. So, no matter what wireless connection your networking solutions rely on, RSSI can be a good indicator of whether or not your network devices are equipped with robust connectivity. RSSI signal strength measurements are indicated in negative values, which are relative. Usually, the closer the value to zero is, the stronger and higher the quality of the signal there is. However, it’s important to consider that RSSI values aren’t standardised across industries. This means that the interpretation of these values can differ from one network device manufacturer to another. Teltonika Networks devices that support mobile technologies indicate RSSI values like this: What is RSRP? Now, focusing on networking solutions that rely on mobile technologies, like 4G, 5G, and so on, RSRP becomes especially relevant. RSRP stands for reference signal received power and is a type of RSSI measurement. But with RSRP particularly, it’s used to measure the power of mobile signals spread over the full bandwidth and narrowband. By measuring RSRP over the full bandwidth, you can see your network's overall signal coverage and capacity across all frequencies used for your networking solutions. Measuring RSRP over a narrowband can help assess the quality of the connection in specific frequency ranges. This is relevant for optimising network performance and troubleshooting specific issues that might affect signal quality. Essentially, the RSRP signal strength indicates a more precise measurement of the cellular connectivity the receiver network device obtains. This information can help you make informed decisions about your networking solution’s network infrastructure, its further improvements, and quality of service (QoS) assessments. Similar to RSSI, RSRP signal strength is also relative and can differ according to the scale set by each manufacturer. Additionally, it’s measured in negative values. For devices from Teltonika Networks, RSRP values look like this: THE NEXT STEP FOR YOU? All Teltonika Networks devices equipped with Wi-Fi or mobile connectivity display both RSSI and RSRP signal strength indicators, which you can access via RutOS. Oh, and did you know that with the 7.06 version of RutOS, our R&D team enhanced data visualisation for mobile connections? To see it for yourself, here’s a quick walkthrough! If this is news to you, consider updating your agenda to explore these features right now! LIKE THIS STORY? Share it with friends! Facebook X (Twitter) LinkedIn Copy link GOT A QUESTION? - Parking Availability Data Transmission
The TRB145 IoT gateway enables smart parking availability systems. Click here to learn how. Wireless Parking Availability Data Transmission SUMMARY 2019 research performed in the United States found that only 5% of workers used public transport for their daily trips and the rest were using personal vehicles. Due to the high volume of cars on the streets, up to 30% of traffic is composed of daily commuters. They are left wandering about, trying to find a free parking spot. People looking for available parking also pollute the environment with car exhaust fumes. So, is there a way to address this issue and reduce adverse effects? CHALLENGE A smart parking display system is one of the most promising solutions to reduce the negative effects caused by difficulty finding available parking. Once drivers receive clear information about parking space availability, they can immediately take appropriate action instead of wandering about finding a parking area. However, such a solution has several prerequisites to be met. Drivers need to see the available parking spaces displayed somewhere easy to see. Also, parking spaces need constant monitoring to know if they are taken. That way, vehicles can follow the directions and find an unoccupied parking space without adding traffic congestion. Then comes the question of connectivity. The display needs to receive information from parking sensors. However, a spot that is easy to see for drivers might be further away from the sensors. For example, the display board is located near a three-story parking lot entrance. Then a wired connection between the two becomes problematic, highly expensive or near impossible to implement. PARTNERS Novatronic is an expert in providing innovative passenger information solutions for public transportation. They have extensive experience with projects that deliver critical information to passengers on a daily basis. Nedap is one of the leading specialists in long-range identification systems. With over 30 years of experience with RFID technology, their goal is to secure the flow of vehicles in cities and streamline transportation, increasing overall safety. SOLUTION Novatronic, with the help of Nedap and connectivity solution from Teltonika Networks, created a system to display available parking spaces for drivers. This urban IoT solution has already been tested and installed in Belgrade, where it continues to help solve traffic congestion, exhaust fume pollution and noise issues. First, Nedap installed sensors in each parking spot connected to a communication unit. Once it collects all the information about parking availability via sensors, it is sent to a Nedap cloud server. The display board is installed farther from the sensors and still needs to acquire data from the server. In this case, a wired connection would be inconvenient as it adds extra costs and takes additional time to set up. For these reasons they chose 4G cellular connection provided by Teltonika Networks industrial LTE gateway TRB145 , installed within the display housing. TRB145 uses a 4G LTE cellular connection to retrieve the information from the server and passes on the parking space availability data to the display via the RS485 serial interface. The TRB145 gateway design is compact enough to easily fit within the display board, making it great for IoT setups that must fit in tight spaces. Also, TRB145 runs on the open-source operating system — RutOS, allowing for seamless integration with other systems and software as users can customize it according to their needs, tasks at hand and the existing infrastructure. TOPOLOGY BENEFITS TRB145 has a sturdy aluminum housing that resists vibrations near heavy and constant traffic. TRB145 has a compact design, perfect for the fast and easy deployment of urban IoT solutions and tight spaces. Thanks to multiple software features like Firewall, Open VPN and more, TRB145 is great for applications where security plays an important role. TRB145 provides stable 4G LTE cellular connectivity where wired connection isn't an option. WHY TELTONIKA NETWORKS? Teltonika Networks has extensive experience providing connectivity solutions for urban and industrial IoT setups. Novatronic found all the required functionality with our product and, after performing extensive testing, have decided to implement it into their solution. The TRB145 industrial gateway was perfect for the Novatronic available parking space display. LIKE THIS STORY? Share it with friends! Facebook X (Twitter) LinkedIn Copy link GOT A QUESTION? - IoT Gateway for Utilities SCADA System in Sharjah, the UAE
An IoT gateway with port forwarding can enable SCADA systems that include APN SIM cards. Click here to learn more. IoT Gateway for Utilities SCADA System in Sharjah, the UAE Highlights ✔ Avanceon is an automation and control engineering solution provider operating from Dubai and Abu Dhabi to service 16 industrial and manufacturing market segments, including energy and utilities, critical infrastructure, and transportation. ✔ Its client, the Sharjah Electricity, Water & Gas Authority, has a SCADA system that includes APN SIM cards. These bolster the system’s security but present some M2M communication challenges, necessitating an IoT gateway that supports the DNP3 protocol and is capable of port forwarding. ✔ The device chosen is our TRB246 IoT gateway, enabling this remote management solution by providing robust serial communication support and reliable LTE Cat 4 connectivity. The challenge – the complexities of SCADA communication Supervisory control and data acquisition ( SCADA ) systems are an integral part of the telemetry and utilities sector. SCADA systems enable both private companies and governmental authorities to remotely manage and control PLCs, collect usage data of utilities such as electricity, water, and gas, and perform tasks such as pump activation or valve closing. Our partner, Avanceon, was helping the Sharjah Electricity, Water & Gas Authority (SEWA) in the UAE to establish smooth connectivity and implement a SCADA system for the energy and utilities critical infrastructure in the city of Sharjah. When it came to choosing the networking device, however, this solution’s criteria presented a challenge. SEWA needed the chosen networking device to include private Access Point Name (APN) SIM cards. This inclusion would bypass the security risk of using a regular SIM card and have its data transmitted publicly over the cloud. However, private APN SIM cards make remote management and control of the PLCs difficult. They demand port forwarding to be used, directing M2M communication to a designated TCP port number supported by the SCADA system. In other words, an IoT gateway that could enable this redirection was needed. Topology The solution – port forwarding IoT gateway Avanceon chose the Teltonika Networks TRB246 industrial IoT gateway to facilitate redirected M2M communication in SEWA’s SCADA system. On one end of the system, the device is connected to the SCADA computer system in SEWA’s headquarters in Sharjah. On the other end, for every PLC distributed in Sharjah and connected to this SCADA system, a TRB246 IoT gateway is installed as well. The connection on both ends is done via the IoT gateway’s RJ45 port. The complexity of this solution is not in its physical setup – it’s in the architecture of its M2M communication. The PLC monitors the myriad of telemetry data, such as water pressure in pipes, gas flow, and electricity usage, and transmits it wirelessly to the remote SCADA system. This transmission is carried out via port forwarding : redirecting and forwarding the communication request from the PLC to a designated port number supported by the SCADA system: the TCP port 20000. This facilitates secure and effective communication via the DNP3 protocol. The SCADA system then analyses the telemetry data and can perform remote troubleshooting of any end equipment connected to the PLC. This minimises downtime and eliminates the need for engineers to travel for manual troubleshooting – resulting in an impeccably-automated remote system without sacrificing security. Port forwarding and support of the DNP3 protocol are the main features needed in this case, but the TRB246 has plenty more to offer. This industrial IoT gateway provides reliable LTE Cat 4 connectivity with dual SIM functionality, auto-failover, backup WAN, and more switching scenarios for maximum connection reliability. Apart from the DNP3 protocol, the TRB246 also supports Modbus TCP, Modbus RTU, DLMS, and many other communication protocols. In terms of interfaces, it is equipped with the aforementioned RJ45 port, as well as I/Os and 16-pin terminal block RS232 port and RS485 port. Housed in durable aluminium housing with DIN rail mountain options and capable of withstanding temperatures ranging from -40 °C to 75 °C, this IoT gateway can handle any industrial environment the PLCs are installed in. When it comes to connection reliability and architecture versatility, the TRB246 is the perfect choice for SCADA systems managing critical infrastructure and telemetry. LIKE THIS STORY? This is why our Remote Management System (RMS) received an important update this past week: version 4.0. The update does not change RMS in any drastic way, so all the value you’re used to getting is still there. But there are also new features and quality-of-life changes we’ve implemented for you, so let’s go over the main ones! NEW FEATURES At Teltonika Networks, we believe there is always room for improvement. RMS is no exception. Here’s some of the extra value you’re getting with RMS 4.0: Multi-config : This new and exciting feature lets you configure individual Teltonika Networks device parameters directly via RMS, without needing to access the device’s WebUI. This is a huge upgrade on how device parameter configuration used to work. Previously, all changes had to be implemented as an entire set with backup uploads. With RMS 4.0, the individual elements you personally want to change can be easily changed without affecting any other elements. Multi-config also provides a list of suggested parameters whenever you start typing their name when searching, and identifies and reports pushed configuration errors directly to you for analysis. Please note that Multi-config is only compatible with devices running firmware version 7.3 or up. Custom templates : With multi-config you can now create custom device configuration templates, ensuring that the exact same changes are quickly and easily applied to selected and future devices. Device recognition and secure parameters uploading: When migrating from one device to another, using Multi-config, RMS will recognize interchangeable, compatible, and incompatible parameters of the new device and will not attempt to configure unsupported features. For example, it will not attempt to configure Wi-Fi parameters for RUTX09 . UI UPDATES User interface is all about streamlining your experience and making things more intuitive to work with. You can find the full list of UI updates on our Wiki , but here are the main ones you should know: Enhanced filtering : the filtering tab, where you can easily add, change, or remove filtering parameters, is now available at the top of the device’s window. The filtering itself isn’t changing – we’re just reducing the number of clicks involved and giving you more control over the parameters you want easier access to. RMS Connect protocol menus: Previously, RMS Connect had separate sub-menus for each protocol. With this update, the HTTP(S), SSH, Telnet, and SFTP protocols, as well as Remote Desktop, are now available in a single sub-menu: Remote Access . They can also be filtered inside sub-menus. The only one that keeps its own menu is Remote mobile devices . Centralized administration . Management of your devices, users, tags, files, codes, and more was previously spread across different menus. With RMS 4.0, they are now in a single location: Administration . LIKE THIS STORY? - Precisely Monitoring the Flow and Pressure of Drilling Mud
Teltonika Networks' TRB245 IoT gateway advances drilling mud flow and pressure monitoring for optimised oil and gas drilling operations. Read more! Precisely Monitoring the Flow and Pressure of Drilling Mud SUMMARY Mud and industrial machinery don’t exactly see eye to eye, but in the world of drilling, they have struck an unlikely alliance. Drilling mud, also known as drilling fluid, is a viscous liquid used in oil and gas drilling for lubricating the drill, keeping it cool, and supporting its stability, among other important functions. However, for how useful it is, drilling mud is also very dangerous. Like having to bring along a toddler to a store where everything is made of glass, a lapse of concentration can make things go horribly awry. CHALLENGE Drilling mud is under constant hydrostatic pressure, and the amount of pressure determines whether it is an integral part of the drilling process or a serious work hazard. As such, the right amount of pressure needs to be maintained. Too much pressure results in overbalance. Not enough results in underbalance. Both can potentially damage the drilling gear, so the continuous pumping of drilling mud, known as mud flow, must be monitored at all times. Drilling gear is very expensive, so leaving the question of pressure balance to human judgment is just asking for trouble. This calls for the precise, automated monitoring and control of the mud flow, performed by a solution capable of withstanding the vibrations of such an adverse work environment. PARTNER RAZRLAB is a UAE-based veteran in creating practical, tailor-made IoT solutions for a variety of different sectors in Africa and the middle east. From prototyping to implementation, RAZRLAB ensures that technological challenges are solved using cutting-edge IoT systems. Its client in the UAE was having mud flow troubles on its drilling rig, and RAZRLAB’s team put their minds to work. SOLUTION The solution they came up with is a flowmeter installed inside the drilling rig, measuring the mud flow and immediately alerting when any deviations in hydrostatic pressure occur. The flowmeter then sends this data to a custom RAZR IoT cloud platform accessible remotely by a centralized control dashboard showing real-time drill rig parameters. The communication between the flowmeter and the cloud platform is facilitated by our reliable heavy-duty workhorse: the TRB245 industrial gateway and its RS485 port. It provides a steady internet connection and ensures the connection will remain uninterrupted thanks to its dual SIM functionality and auto-failover feature. Designed with sturdy aluminum housing for vibration resistance as well as compact size, the TRB245 was made for this exact type of rugged work environment. It can easily be installed inside the drill and withstand the constant vibrations of the drilling, as well as extreme temperatures. It is quite literally perfect for the job. TOPOLOGY BENEFITS TRB245’s small and compact design makes it easy to fit into machinery with very little wiggle room, allowing for a wider range of applications. Encased with aluminum and designed to withstand the vibrations and extreme temperatures of an industrial work environment, the TRB245 is reliable even in adverse conditions. Modbus RTU and MQTT capabilities mean TRB245’s internet connectivity is perfect for telemetry and sensory data conversion, and a built-in GNSS also makes it easily trackable. WHY TELTONIKA NETWORKS? RAZRLAB themselves put it best: “By combining Teltonika Telematics and Teltonika Networks products, we built multiple solutions that add immense value to our customers. Our drill rig monitoring application takes drilling activities to the next level. “The TRB245, having Modbus RTU and MQTT communication capabilities and interfaced with flow and pressure sensors, was the ideal solution for facilitating a seamless application where telemetry and sensory data conversion into a single asset are paramount.” DOWNLOAD CATALOG! TOPOLOGY THE SOLUTION – DURABLE, HIGH-PERFORMANCE CONNECTIVITY With the help of Capestone, Agrifac installed our RUT956 cellular router in each of its crop sprayers. Capestone also provided custom configuration that enabled this perfect fit. Connected via Ethernet communication, this industrial networking device provides connectivity to the mobile machines – creating a stable and secure mobile data communication bridge to Agrifac’s cloud server. On top of robust LTE Cat 4 connectivity and Dual SIM for extra reliability, this high-performance router has a number of features that make it shine all the brighter in this use case. Firstly, RUT956 has GNSS capabilities for location services and time synchronization. This is paramount for a solution involving mobile equipment, like Agrifac’s industrial machines. Secondly, the router is encased in sturdy aluminum housing with plastic panels, ensuring that no environmental or weather condition fit for growing crops would disrupt the device in any way. Lastly, and most broadly, RUT956 brings added control, security, and reliability to the table with a few of its additional features. Agrifac found great use in using the mobile module and FOTA updates, and sees potential in using MQTT broker and Teltonika Networks’ Remote Management System (RMS) for possible future upgrades to the solution.
