  • Remote Management Of Siemens PLC S7-1200 Via a Cellular Router

Wondering how can Siemens PLC S7-1200 controllers be remotely controlled using Teltonika’s cellular router and RMS IoT platform? Read to find out! Remote Management Of Siemens PLC S7-1200 Via a Cellular Router PDF PDF PDF Highlights ✔ High Systems Electromechanics is an integrator based in United Arab Emirates that provides one-stop IoT solutions across sectors like industrial automation, solar energy, water treatment, and security. ✔ It had a challenge of achieving remote management over its Siemens PLC S7-1200 controllers, knowing that APN SIM cards and public IPs would be invalid choices. ✔ Our RUT200 cellular router and RMS duo came to the rescue, enabling simple and cost-efficient remote management and monitoring capabilities over VPN tunnels. The challenge – expensive remote control Remote management of IoT solutions significantly changes the way they operate and how we interact with them, leading to a game-changing shift in most industries. Automating routine tasks, establishing remote diagnostics , and enabling access to IoT devices without physical travel to sites – remote management fosters increased efficiency and convenience. The most typical methods for remote management include using a private APN SIM card or assigning public IPs for simple and easy device communication via the Internet. Yet, they’re far from perfect. While private APN SIM cards are known for providing secure and isolated network infrastructures for IoT solutions, they’re also a complex and expensive way of achieving remote management. This complexity arises because APN SIM card integration requires specialised know-how for setup and can become significantly more costly if a solution plans to scale. Now, public IPs come with many security risks due to exposure on the Internet, scalability issues, and operational costs resulting from IPv4 limitations. The best alternative to private APN SIM cards and public IPs for achieving remote management capabilities is through VPN tunnels, which can be seamlessly established using our Remote Management System (RMS) and compact RUT200 cellular router. Topology The solution – affordable and secure alternative The combination of our RMS and the RUT200 4G router can certainly compete for the title of “best duo”. Together, they establish a very cost-effective, secure, and simple way of establishing reliable remote monitoring and management capabilities, applicable not only to RMS-compatible devices but also to third-party ones. This is precisely why our client, High Systems Electromechanics, selected this combination to connect to their Siemens PLC S7-1200 controller remotely. The RUT200 cellular router, connected to the Siemens PLC S7-1200 controller via Ethernet, fulfils a critical role – ensuring robust network connectivity support. This is essential for the entire system, as (to nobody’s surprise) the absence of an Internet connection would simply remove the possibility of establishing remote management. Since the RUT200 4G router and RMS support the OpenVPN protocol, our client creates a secure VPN tunnel using this protocol. Once the VPN tunnel using OpenVPN is launched, the client retrieves the Siemens PLC’s IP address, which enables seamless remote control of the PLC from the client’s remote office. Here, the RMS VPN service and our RUT200 cellular router act as an affordable and secure link between the remote office and the PLC, as their duo erases dependency on private APN SIM cards or public IP addresses. This makes the duo of RMS and RUT200 a great choice for those seeking an easy way to keep their business cost-effective, private, and secure. LIKE THIS STORY? Share it with friends! THE CHALLENGE – THE LEGACY OF WATER Ever wondered where the water you use to wash your hair, body, or dishes ends up after it hits the drain? Back into the glass of water that you drink. Don’t worry though – it undergoes a lengthy cleaning process before it’s once again safe for consumption. Behind this paradox are wastewater treatment plants that make this unpleasant yet necessary water treatment possible. As the water treatment process contains many steps, ensuring the top-notch performance of its machinery is key. Otherwise, if just a single part of the plant breaks or shuts down, it’ll inevitably lead to loss of money and time and reduce productivity. How to prevent the plant from all of this? By monitoring water levels, pressure, and temperature flows and controlling the entire infrastructure in cases where process parameters exceed normal operating values. The monitoring and infrastructure’s control must be automated to eliminate human errors, but it must be realized without changing any existing equipment, as legacy industrial equipment often doesn’t support features like Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, and doesn’t even have Ethernet interfaces. So, it’s quite a tough challenge... TOPOLOGY THE SOLUTION – THE AUTOMATION OF LEGACIES Thanks to our great partners, VISL, a wastewater treatment plant in Guyana got a great and cost-effective solution without having to change its existing equipment! With RUT956 cellular router, the entire plant got supplied with robust network connectivity via three ways – Ethernet ports, Wi-Fi, and dual SIM support – which is a significant advantage of the router as the rest of the automation processes couldn’t be executed without a reliable Internet signal. With wired connectivity as the main access to the Internet and cellular operating as backup, RUT956 has one more feature that made this solution full-fledged: the RS-232 interface. By connecting the router to the plant’s PLC, this interface enabled a single, seamlessly-functioning ecosystem. Thanks to the Modbus TCP protocol crucial for telemetry, this solution allowed decoding all data from the water level, temperature, and pressure flow sensors. To make this data available for engineers to read and analyze, it was then directed to VISL’s “Fogwing” cloud platform using the MQTT protocol, allowing broadcast visualizations, analytics, and real-time alerts. This data enabled continuous monitoring of the entire plant’s system and helped take preventive actions accordingly, thus avoiding hazards and plant equipment damage. Both actions could be performed remotely and on-site while using the Wi-Fi our RUT956 cellular router is equipped to provide. To top this solution off and guarantee a plant’s best performance, our Remote Management System (RMS) was used to fully control and monitor our devices, making sure that each one of them is working accordingly. Improving daily operations with automatization and control over the plant’s network elevates your solution to reaching its best performance. So water you waiting for? LIKE THIS STORY? • Unlocking the Automation of Center-pivot Irrigation Systems

The RUTX11 Cat 6 cellular router enables automated centre-pivot irrigation systems. Click here to learn how. UNLOCKING THE AUTOMATION OF CENTER-PIVOT IRRIGATION SYSTEMS PDF PDF PDF HIGHLIGHTS ✔ Center-pivot irrigation systems are a great way to use water resources where exactly needed, reduce water consumption rates, and offer farmers convenience and efficiency. But to maximize their potential, they must be connected to a network for remote access, management, and control. ✔ Since crop fields are located in rural areas, providing network connectivity for the irrigation system isn’t an easy task. Luckily, we have just the right router for that – RUTX11. ✔ With a cellular connectivity option, carrier aggregation feature, and other perks like GNSS and multiple interfaces, RUTX11 is sure to equip the entire irrigation solution with robust, uninterrupted connectivity that enables remote access, saving farmers tons of labor costs and time. THE CHALLENGE – OUTDATED IRRIGATION Every living creature on our planet relies on water to survive. Despite its fundamental role in our environment, ecosystems, and food supply, the ways we treat water resources aren’t necessarily the smartest. Current water consumption statistics reveal that agriculture takes up to 70% of all global water withdrawals. However, this percentage is estimated to only increase, as we’re about to welcome 2 billion more people into the world by the end of 2050 . And yes, it makes sense that this amount of water gets dedicated to growing crops we feed farm animals with. Still, a whopping 40% of the water farmers use in their crop fields gets wasted due to outdated and poorly thought-out irrigation practices. Luckily, there are ways to solve this issue, one of them being center-pivot irrigation systems. These can reduce water consumption by automating the entire crop field irrigation process, including applying fertilizers and other chemicals to crops. But the potential doesn’t stop there. With the help of network connectivity, such systems help farmers save time, reduce labor costs, and increase efficiency by providing remote access to the system. This allows irrigation scheduling based on specific criteria or environmental conditions. However, achieving such cool things isn’t easy, as crop fields are located in rural areas without excellent network coverage. That’s why a solution like this must be equipped with the best network connectivity devices. TOPOLOGY THE SOLUTION – PIVOTING TO AUTOMATION A perfect candidate for enabling M2M communication and providing robust network connectivity is our RUTX11 cellular router that rings all the bells and whistles. First and foremost, with the ability to have cellular connectivity as the primary Internet source, RUTX11 is sure to provide the entire center-pivot irrigation system with a robust and uninterrupted network – even in the countryside. The router also offers a carrier aggregation function, allowing the merging of two bands for a significant boost in data transmission bandwidth. This technology further increases the network's reliability with improved coverage and stability, crucial for solutions located in remote areas. But what exact opportunities does such reliable network connectivity provide? The number one benefit of robust network connectivity is the ability for the entire system to perform M2M communication and exchange data between pivot’s controllers, monitoring center, and third-party apps. This makes the entire irrigation system's status and data visible remotely. Farmers can then track, control, and make adjustments to the system without needing to travel to each irrigation system point. Controlling the operating times of components, as well as monitoring a myriad of data, can be done anywhere, anytime! Another cool thing about RUTX11 is its GNSS feature, which is especially relevant for farmers with many irrigation systems spread across the fields. If one pivot happens to stop working, it can send corresponding notifications to the monitoring center and, thanks to GNSS, provide its exact location. This can help farmers quickly and conveniently identify which pivots have stopped working and take appropriate action to the call. Our router also has many different interfaces, such as I/Os, Ethernet, and a USB port, which can be used to connect serial devices using a USB-to-Serial converter. These interfaces make the device easily applicable to multiple pivots that might require different interfaces. Such a solution not only helps cut water consumption costs and thus lower the percentage occupied by global water withdrawals, but it enables the farmers to perform their day-to-day tasks much more efficiently. This 5G router supports a multitude of VPNs, from WireGuard to ZeroTier , giving the influencers a wide selection for choosing the most secure VPN option to connect to their home server for site-to-site traffic. Given this, they establish a data transmission tunnel using the MQTT protocol so the server can read sensor data from the RV. Wireless sensor network and data operations are what truly make this solution unique. Chantal and Donny created custom sensors using the Arduino platform to measure things like water, gas, and temperature levels, and toggle switches or LED strips. Once the connections are established, everything can be controlled, monitored, and logged with the home server remotely. Talk about convenience! Additionally, this 5G router allows Chantal and Donny to use the Home Assistant app as an automation hub, enabling them to perform tasks like turning on the RV’s diesel heater or checking the temperature outside. With such reliable connectivity, they can even monitor camera feeds when motion detectors trigger the alarm. Creativity knows no bounds, and with a reliable and robust 5G router empowering you to accomplish anything you set your mind to, it becomes the ultimate example of innovation in action. • IoT life for people with disabilities

Freedom of speech, equality, and movement are valuable assets which we often forget until we can no longer move or walk. Municipalities, and businesses adapting public/private spaces for people with disabilities. Still, there are places unreachable for disabled people, e.g. open beach. See how it can get solved. IoT improving quality of life for people with disabilities PDF PDF BUSINESS CHALLENGE Freedom - the most valuable asset in our lives! Freedom of speech, freedom to create, freedom of equality, freedom of movement. We tend to forget it as long as we have it. But when unexpected events change our lives and when it becomes hard to move or even impossible to walk, only then we realize that we took some things for granted. Nowadays, municipalities, businesses are doing their best to adapt public and private spaces as much as possible for people with disabilities. This includes convenient entrances, public transportation, parks, and other areas. But still there a lot of places which are unreachable for disabled people. One of those places is an open beach. PARTNER Thinking Out of the Box Engineering Applications (TOBEA) is a Spin-Off company of the University of Patras founded in 2012. Tobea was established by professor Vassilis Kostopoulos and the initiator Gerasimos Fessian. Their close friend was unable to swim at the beach without asking others for help. And after the research, they found out that there was nothing on the market that would help people with impaired movement to have a nice swim in the ocean without assistance. Therefore Tobea company started to investigate how they can create a solution for such people, and that‘s how SEATRAC was born. SEATRAC is a non-permanent device for autonomous access to the sea for people with disabilities that hold Greek, European, and US patents. Tobea team is composed of fifteen members who share the same vision: to innovate and improve themselves, the company, and society. TOPOLOGY SOLUTION As presented in the topology above, the solution consists of solar panels powering Seatrac controller, which is connected to an industrial cellular router RUT241 by Teltonika Networks using an Ethernet interface. RUT241 uses 3G to monitor solution remotely, and send alerts in case of any connection irregularities. It is a crucial intermediary between controller, platform and the operator to ensure that solution of Tobea – Seatrac, is always operational and the users are safe. In addition, people can always check the interactive map, where this solution is installed, and if it is working. For Tobea, it was essential to produce a solution that is autonomous, to provide persons with impaired movement capabilities a sense of freedom and independence. The fact that SEATRAC is moniroted remotely using 3G cellular signal allows that because the solution operators don’t need to attend it at all times. They can support multiple solutions over larger beach area and respond when needed. BENEFITS Remote operation - Using the solution control platform that communicates with the help of Teltonika RUT241 solution operators monitor and detects any faults on the solution. Easy to use – Tobea provides an interactive map, which allows to find all SEATRAC deployment easily. Automated alerts - RUT241 sends notifications if there are any irregularities in the solution. Remote service - RUT241 allows for solution engineer to connect to the controller remotely. Easy set-up – RUT241 is very easy to set-up, easy to use and even easier to maintain therefore minimizing the time spent at the site. WHY Teltonika Networks? Tobea selected the RUT241 by Teltonika Networks because of its reliability, security, and ease of use. Moreover, the size of the router was important as the box of controller needed to be small enough. Our partner also highlighted the excellent and fast technical support to help get their solution running as fast as possible! Interested in more use cases like this? Download our use case catalog! • The Large Hadron Collider’s Spy Bug

The RUT956 cellular router is used for providing real-time monitoring of environmental conditions within CERN’s Large Hadron Collider. Click here to learn more. The Large Hadron Collider’s Spy Bug PDF PDF PDF PDF HIGHLIGHTS ✔ The European Organization for Nuclear Research ( CERN ) is the world’s top physics research organization, working tirelessly to uncover the mechanics of the universe while creating and implementing cutting-edge technologies in pursuit of that goal. ✔ In order to provide real-time monitoring of environmental conditions within its Large Hadron Collider, CERN needed a connectivity device to be part of its innovative Train Inspection Monorail ( TIM ). ✔ CERN chose our RUT956 cellular router for this important role. Its combination of low power consumption, connection stability with added security features, and a versatile array of I/Os make the RUT956 the perfect fit to be added to TIM’s core. THE CHALLENGE – LIGHTSPEED WORK ENVIRONMENT The Large Hadron Collider is the world’s most famous particle collider, used by CERN to test hypotheses in the field of physics. That includes firing particles at just a smidge under the speed of light, which is pretty damn fast. Calling it incredible would be an understatement, to say the least. As you can probably imagine, these experiments require rigorous control of the environmental conditions within the Collider, such as its oxygen levels, temperature, and whether its thousands of supercooled electromagnets or any other structural pieces are all intact and in place. The deeper into physics you go, the less room you have for errors. Specialized sensors and cameras are great for monitoring an industrial environment, but they can only get you so far by themselves. The Collider is a 27km (16.7 miles) tunnel, so the amount of equipment needed to cover it in its entirety is colossal, not to mention all the extra wiring and the trouble of connecting every single device to CERN’s internal network. Without the latter, the scientists won’t have direct access to the data collected. Since CERN is full of very smart people, it came up with a simpler alternative: a small, mobile vehicle equipped with a set of cameras and sensors, suspended from the tunnel’s ceiling and moving around the Collider using a monorail system. It is known as the Train Inspection Monorail, though there are some who call it TIM. TIM goes around the tunnel and surveys critical variables like an advanced spy bug, thereby solving the needless complexity issue. However, to solve the connectivity issue, TIM needed a device that could connect all sensors and cameras equipped to it and send their data to CERN’s internal network. Without one, the data ceases to be real-time, and when you do things at the speed of light – that’s just not good enough. TOPOLOGY THE SOLUTION – TO CONNECTIVITY AND BEYOND! To resolve the connectivity issue, CERN added our RUT956 cellular router to TIM’s core, establishing a stable and secure 4G connection that sends the aggregated data to CERN’s internal network, where the scientists can access it in real time. The main feature that elevates RUT956 to this prestigious role is its versatile set of I/Os, reducing complexity when connecting the different cameras and sensors, each with its own interface. Other cellular routers may excel in other features but would narrow down the range of compatible devices. Using the RUT956, that range can remain wide so that CERN can work with the best ones for the job. Additional security features like a built-in VPN and stability measures such as dual SIM failover further bolster the value this router provides to TIM, while its low power consumption is critical since TIM runs on a battery. And all of that from a sturdy, compact, and industrially-designed device that can handle the extreme temperatures and vibrations of such a hazardous working environment. LIKE THIS STORY?
