Challenges of monitoring high-voltage transmission lines
Power transmission networks are critical infrastructure; however, many high-voltage lines are in remote areas where monitoring and maintenance are difficult.
Laki Power is an Iceland-based cleantech company creating smart monitoring technology for electricity grids. Installed directly on live power lines, their systems operate in extreme conditions, from Arctic temperatures below -40°C to hot and dusty desert environments.
Because these monitoring technologies rely on sensors, cameras, edge computing, and remote communication, maintaining a reliable connection is a key challenge. Our client needed an industrial connectivity device that could provide secure data transmission, remote access, and reliable operation in locations where physical maintenance is difficult.
Teltonika RUT206 router was selected to provide communication links between deployed systems and Laki Power’s remote infrastructure.

Teltonika RUT206 router as a connectivity solution
LKX-MULTI technology brings together several monitoring and communication technologies into one rugged platform installed directly on live high-voltage transmission lines. The system combines a weather station, quad-camera system, edge computing hardware, Starlink satellite communication, and Teltonika RUT206 industrial LTE router to help utilities monitor critical power infrastructure in remote locations.
The monitoring devices continuously collect data about grid conditions, weather changes, icing risks, and potential wildfire threats. Cameras capture visual information, sensors measure environmental conditions, and edge computing processes data locally before sending important information to our client’s backend systems.
At the center of this communication system is Teltonika RUT206 router. It works as the main connectivity hub, connecting the field monitoring equipment with cloud or on-premises servers. Through its Ethernet interface, the router communicates with onboard edge computing systems, while its RS232 serial interface allows direct connection with industrial monitoring equipment.
Because high-voltage lines are often located in remote areas with limited access, reliable communication is critical. The system uses Starlink satellite connectivity as the primary internet connection, while RUT206 provides a 4G cellular connection as a backup communication path when mobile network coverage is available. This dual-connectivity setup helps keep monitoring systems online even if one connection becomes unavailable.
Security is another key requirement for remote infrastructure. RUT206 creates an encrypted VPN connection between the monitoring platform and Laki Power’s backend systems, allowing engineers to securely access equipment, transfer data, and manage devices remotely.
The router is designed for challenging industrial environments. Its wide 9-36 VDC power input allows it to operate from the platform’s battery-backed power system, helping maintain stable communication during power fluctuations. RUT206’s compact 83 × 25 × 83 mm size also makes it suitable for installation inside the limited space of our client’s rugged monitoring enclosure.
With SMS-based remote management, engineers can update configurations, troubleshoot connection issues, and restore system operation without traveling to remote transmission sites. This is especially valuable for installations in Arctic regions, deserts, and other locations where physical maintenance is difficult.
By providing reliable 4G connectivity, secure remote access, industrial interfaces, and flexible power support, Teltonika RUT206 enables Laki Power’s monitoring systems to deliver continuous visibility into high-voltage networks. This solution helps utilities reduce manual inspections, improve grid reliability, and make faster decisions based on real-time data.
