Embedded IoT Gateway for Access Control Systems

HIGHLIGHTS

Modern access gates demand real-time, contactless authentication but extending wired internet to outdoor perimeters or isolated entry points comes with massive infrastructure installation costs.

The Teltonika Oxa embedded IoT gateway was selected for its casing-free PCB format and LTE Cat 4 connectivity, allowing it to fit perfectly into tight gate access control enclosures.

Designed as an embedded system, this board-level device utilizes field-tested RutOS firmware to provide out-of-the-box security features and industrial protocols, eliminating custom software risks.

THE CHALLENGE – THE COSTLY HURDLE OF WIRED INFRASTRUCTURE

In modern smart infrastructure and critical facility management, entry gates, turnstiles, and barriers serve as the primary line of defence. These access control systems require immediate, secure validation of visitor credentials via NFC cards, mobile applications, or ticketing terminals.

However, implementing these automated systems creates a massive deployment bottleneck. Routing physical communication lines (such as Ethernet or fibre cables) across vast outdoor spaces, concrete layouts, or isolated perimeters is financially and logistically inefficient. Ground trenching, municipal permitting, and manual labour quickly inflate project budgets and extend deployment timelines.

To overcome this, developers building dedicated embedded systems must design self-contained, weather-resistant access control boxes built directly inside the slim chassis of physical barriers. Yet standard routers are often too bulky for such deployments. They consume critical space inside tight enclosures and add unnecessary costs for their casings and mounting accessories.

Security integrators and OEMs require a highly reliable, compact, and wireless device that delivers industrial-grade cellular connectivity directly at the board level.

THE SOLUTION – EMBEDDED CELLULAR CONNECTION FOR GATE ACCESS CONTROL

The answer to bypassing the limitations of wired infrastructure lies in embedding cellular connection right at the hardware level using the Teltonika Oxa IoT gateway. Operating as a dedicated, casing-free PCB module with pre-drilled mechanical mounting points, the Oxa fits seamlessly into space-constrained hardware enclosures.

When a visitor taps an NFC card or mobile device at a gate reader, the credential data is instantly passed to the barrier's internal controller. Oxa utilizes LTE Cat 4 to securely route the data packet over the cellular network to a centralised cloud database for instant verification. Once the system validates the user, an instantaneous response is sent back the same way, triggering the gate mechanism to unlock – all within milliseconds.

By leveraging this ready-to-integrate 4G gateway, engineers can deploy connected embedded systems without months of engineering. They also eliminate software development risks and costs associated with building from a bare module level. The pre-configured, highly customizable RutOS firmware provides built-in industrial protocols and advanced security features – including OpenVPN, WireGuard, IPsec, and a robust firewall – ensuring that credential data remains completely encrypted and protected from interception.

To support this distributed wireless deployment, the solution utilizes the Teltonika Remote Management System (RMS). Through RMS, security administrators achieve full remote visibility to monitor gate networks in real-time, push mass configuration or firmware updates, and securely troubleshoot connected end devices without requiring physical site visits. This removes maintenance bottlenecks, making wireless perimeter security systems scalable, secure, and highly cost-efficient.
