  • Beyond Signal Bars: Understanding RSSI, RSRP, SINR & Other Key Metrics

Signal bars don’t tell the whole story. Uncover real mobile signal metrics for peak performance. Click to reveal your device’s true connection quality. More News 1/28/2026 Meet Altos: The Wi-Fi 7 Router Invited to Your Living Room 1/21/2026 Managed vs unmanaged switches: choose the right fit 1/20/2026 Password Security Standards – Best Practices to Protect your Devices Beyond Signal Bars: Understanding RSSI, RSRP, SINR & Other Key Metrics 17 June 2025 Signal bars may seem straightforward—but do they tell the whole story? In the IoT world, simply being connected isn’t enough. Understanding the quality of that connection is just as important. That’s why Teltonika goes beyond building industrial-grade networking devices—we equip you with the tools and insights to get the most out of them. And it all starts with understanding mobile signal metrics. Your connection depends on several factors—your router, network provider, and physical environment all play a role. Even if your device shows a strong RSSI value, like –68 dBm, it doesn’t always mean your connection will perform well. Why not? Because other elements—such as tower congestion, weather conditions, and distance from the cell tower—can still degrade performance. That’s why we don’t rely solely on signal bars or a single metric to evaluate connection quality. We combine RSSI, RSRP, RSRQ, and SINR to give a complete view of your connection quality. Only by looking at the full picture can you truly understand and manage performance. For professionals, accuracy matters. Let’s break it down by generation. 2G: RSSI LEVEL MEASURING While RSSI offers a limited view of signal quality in modern networks, it remains the primary and often only available indicator in 2G systems. It reflects the power level of the cellular signal received by your modem from the nearest cell tower, measured in dBm. This gives a general idea of how strong the signal is—but not how clean or usable it is. Open WebUI: Status → Network → Mobile If your device is registered to RMS and online, you can use the WebUI icon within RMS to launch the interface remotely. While RSSI provides a basic overview, it doesn’t reflect signal quality, such as noise, interference, or network congestion. Still, in 2G systems where advanced metrics aren't available, RSSI remains your main reference point for assessing connectivity. If your operations depend on consistent 2G coverage, aim for the best mobile signal strength above -70 dBm whenever possible. Check the tab below to understand what's your signal strength. 3G: COMBINING RSSI, EC/IO and RSCP 3G networks use three indicators: RSSI, Ec/Io, RSCP. RSSI works similarly to 2G, but Ec/Io adds signal quality by measuring interference. RSCP tells you how strong the signal is after it's been processed by the network. To check the 3G signal strength values of your RUT device, log in to your router's WebUI through browser and go to: Status -> Network -> Mobile If your device is registered to RMS and online, you can use the WebUI icon within RMS to launch the interface remotely. When optimizing a 3G setup, don’t rely solely on Received Signal Strength Indicator ( RSSI ). A strong RSCP combined with a clean Ec/Io ensures low latency, stable connections, and consistent data throughput. Check the tab below to understand a full picture of your connection. 4G and 5G: RSSI, RSRP, RSRQ, AND SINR MEASURES For 4G and 5G , signal strength and quality are measured using four main indicators. RSSI shows total 4G and 5G signal strength but includes noise. RSRP measures the strength of the useful signal. RSRQ shows how clean the signal is, like Ec/Io in 3G. SINR compares your signal to any interference—higher SINR means faster, more stable internet. To check your router's 4G/5G signal. Log in to your router's WebUI and go to: Status -> Network -> Mobile If your device is registered to RMS and online, you can use the WebUI icon within RMS to launch the interface remotely. For example: Your 4G/5G router might show. RSSI: –68 dBm RSRP: –56 dBm RSRQ: –16 dB SINR: –1.8 dB At a glance, RSSI might seem decent—but SINR and RSRQ suggest poor signal quality. This can be caused by distance from the tower or signal interference. Review the table below for a complete overview of your connection. OTHER METHODS TO CHECK SIGNAL QUALITY Router LEDs : check the Signal Strength LEDs on the router's front panel. While these do not show exact values, they represent RSSI strength in bars, much like a mobile phone. Command Line Interface: For detailed signal diagnostics, use gsmctl commands via CLI. A command interact directly with the router's modem, translating to AT commands and returning readable results—ideal for checking your signal for automation, remote monitoring, or headless setups. Access CLI from System → Maintenance → CLI . You should see a window as shown below where you need to login with default administrator username (root) and a password. Once you're logged in, type the following command: gsmctl -q This will display a detailed table showing your signal strength and quality metrics. WHY UNDERSTANDING SIGNAL MATTERS Understanding your signal metrics, is more than a technical detail—it’s critical for reliable, long-term operations. Signal drops, interference, and slow speeds can compromise your operation success. With Teltonika devices, you can monitor these values directly from the WebUI or Remote Management System (RMS) . This means you can verify the best mobile signal strength without leaving your desk—or optimise installations onsite with real-time feedback. GENERAL TIPS ON IMPROVING SIGNAL ✔️ Place your router and antenna where the signal is strongest and least obstructed—typically near a window or higher up. Avoid physical barriers like thick walls, trees, or buildings that could interfere with the signal. ✔️ Ensure antenna connections on your router are tight and secure—loose connectors can significantly reduce signal quality. ✔️ If you're still experiencing poor connectivity after optimizing placement and hardware, consider switching to a provider with better network coverage in your area. THE IMPORTANCE OF STRENGTH From smart cities to industrial and automation , reliable connectivity starts with understanding your signal metrics. Knowing what cellular signal metrics truly mean, helps you make informed decisions and ensures your setup performs at its best. In Industrial switches word molex is the most used.. Hi Matteo, in fact for our future products we are reviewing our power connector design, however you must appreciate that these changes take time and we want to offer the best mix between product price/connector reliability and offer compatible and reliable power supply units. In short - we are working on it and you should see results in the upcoming devices this year. Is there any reason why the RUT 360 isn't 5G ready? Of course :-) It's price and demand. Everybody wants 5G but not at the price that is currently limited by high component cost. Once it becomes more popular - the prices will reduce and it will make full commercial sense. When we can expect for the same device as RUT360, but with Gb ports? For this reason we have RUTX11 device Does RUT360 replace RUT240? Not at all, it just adds additional options for our partners choosing the most suitable device for their solutions. We believe RUT240 will keep it's lead as the bestselling router for the forseeable future. according to my information, there is currently no 5g router from teltonika. are you planning such a device in the foreseeable future? Yes, we are planning 5G router. When we will have information about it we will let everybody know. Is there a power connector adaptor to wire directly to a wiring loom in a product, i.e. 2x single core wires for + and -. Yes, Teltonika Networks provides cable with open ends Power Cable 4way I represent a company and we have already bought more than 200 RUT240 routers. RUT240 has input/output functionality but the router package have a power cable with 2 cables and so the I/O pins cannot be used. Also the power adaptor is useless to an industrial machine, as we get power directly from our own DC power supply. We are forced to buy a separate 4 cables power cable inorder to use the I/O pins and throw away the standard power cable. Is there an option to get the router with the 4 cables power built-in? Dear Ioannis, this is quite well known issue, due to it we have worked on a custom accessory that will offer reliabble 4-pin connector design on one end and additional I/O terminal on another, so you can utilize I/O without additional tinkering. It should be available next week, so please take a look at our accessory page in upcoming days - Accesories Page Can the LAN port be changed to WAN port as in the rutx11? Yes it can be changed as all our routers have this feature. Please check our wiki or contact your sales manager or contact us. Can we intstal the dinrail mondting plate into the side of the device? Yes you can do it with almost all our devices! What is the power consumption of this RUT360? Check this link: RUT360 Power Consumption does it have two sim slots No, for 2 SIM Cat6 option you should look at RUTX11 is CAT6 the only difference between the RUT240? RUT360 uses new CPU, has 128 MB of RAM, 2X2 MIMO WiFi, and full aluminium casing Can we expect a 5Ghz (dual band) Wifi in the near future on this device ? Our RUTX11 which is currently available offers combination of LTE Cat 6 and AC WiFi (2.4 Ghz + 5Ghz) Will there be outdoor cases and PoE funcionality? We are preparing outdoor router with PoE funcionality in the near future! Does the RUT360 support Volte, you mentioned it can be used in elevators. It support VoLTE, but further features depends on your needs I need the server connected in the lan port to communicate at the same time on both wan (where there is internet) and 4G where there is an M2M card (intenal ip which communicates with field equipment) RUT360 has load balancing functionality, which allows to split traffic between different interface. Contact your sales representative or create HelpDesk query for more information Does RUT360 have sleep mode or standby? • WE HAVE IMPROVED RUTOS WITH NEW FEATURES!

We invite you to have a look at what we have been working on lately and how these new functionalities can ease up your daily business activities and generally make your life more convenient. More News 1/28/2026 Meet Altos: The Wi-Fi 7 Router Invited to Your Living Room 1/21/2026 Managed vs unmanaged switches: choose the right fit 1/20/2026 Password Security Standards – Best Practices to Protect your Devices WE HAVE IMPROVED RUTOS WITH NEW FEATURES! 6 October 2020 We keep on saying this, and we cannot stress this enough, how important it is for us to keep on improving and adding value to our software based on the feedback we get from our clients. We invite you to have a look at what we have been working on lately and how these new functionalities can ease up your daily business activities and generally make your life more convenient. This time we have added some new exciting features to RutOS that will mainly affect RUTX and TRB2 series devices. DLNA We have improved the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) for RUTX family routers by adding media service to the package manager. It means that now you can stream your content from the local storage directly to digital signage outlets, TVs or other DLNA-capable devices, even when they do not have a media player installed. This feature was requested by one of our clients to be used for advertising in kiosks. The router streams the same ads straight to digital signage screens in hundreds of locations without the need to purchase any additional software. NEW USB TOOLS Now you may expand the flash memory of your RUTX family routers via USB mass storage device. This may come in handy if you wish to add additional programming languages. Some of our clients wish to use their own applications, which we do not normally support, and they need additional flash memory to be able to install them. This functionality does not only provide extra space for the content, but it virtually expands the flash memory of the device. Another great feature you will be able to enjoy on RUTX devices is the support of externally attachable USB to Serial adapter. Now you may convert USB data signals to industrial RS232 and RS485 serial data even if the router originally does not support this functionality. One of our top-selling routers – RUT955 – is so popular because it has a wide range of compatible interfaces. While our clients appreciated the speed and performance of the RUTX devices, they could not connect them to the legacy devices via RS232/485 interfaces and having this new functionality will open a wide aray of new possibilities for the application of RUTX family routers. USSD SUPPORT With the new firmware update, our cellular routers support Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD). It is a protocol meant for communication between cellular devices and mobile network operators, usually used with prepaid SIM cards to enable or disable certain services or to obtain information from a network operator. It may come in handy for checking your account balance, data charges and menu-based information services, like IMEI number and changing pin codes. ADDITIONAL VPN SERVICES Protecting online privacy and maintaining data security has always been at the top of our priority list. We have expanded VPN services offering for TRB2 family gateways by adding highly-reliable and widely recognized Stunnel, SSTP and DMVPN options. Stunnel is an open-source a proxy service that adds TLS encryption to clients and servers already existing on a VPN network. TLS encryption provided by Stunnel can be used as an additional layer of encryption for data sent by VPN. This procedure increases the security of the established connection and provides higher chances of passing a Deep packet inspection (DPI) check. Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol (SSTP) is a VPN protocol designed to transport PPP traffic via a secure SSL/TLS channel. Although it is meant mainly for Windows, it can be used with other operating systems too. It creates a single HTTPS tunnel from client to server and keepts the traffic encrypted at all times. DMVPN allows branch locations to communicate directly with each other over the public WAN or Internet, such as when using voice over IP (VOIP) between two branch offices, but doesn’t require a permanent VPN connection between sites. It enables zero-touch deployment of IPsec VPNs and improves network performance by reducing latency and jitter, while optimizing head office bandwidth utilization. TIME SYNCHRONIZATION Historically, Teltonika Networks routers used Network Time Protocol (NTP) for clock synchronization between computer systems over packet-switched, variable-latency data networks. In RutOS, the users are provided with four default time servers, but custom ones can be added too, as per the clients' needs. Our products may act as both: NTP Client and NTP Server, meaning that they are also capable of providing clock synchronization to the other devices in the network. From now on this feature will be also available to TRB2 series gateways. This is a very important feature for clients who are using limited data plans. For example, one of our clients in the transportation sector had a problem when they were reaching the data limits for the month and therefore turning off the devices to avoid extra charges, after turning them back on – the gateways could not detect the time. Now that they can synchronize time via GPS and via operator, there is no need to use data to achieve this task. WI-FI SCANNER WiFi Scanner allows to detect and send nearby non sensitive WiFi devices data. This enables to measure the number of nearby devices using WiFi and send the data to the server. This provides information on the distribution of wireless networks and choose the best option based on availability and better connection speed. One of the application scenarios is event management. The organizer gets the coordinates from the router where the people gather and efficiently allocates the staff into relevant sectors. All these features will be available to the specified devices only with the new firmware RUTX_R_00.02.05.1. You may download it from our RutOS Firmware Download page. LIKE THIS STORY? • Energy Optimisation with Teltonika Networks Ethernet Switches

Read this article to know how Teltonika Networks Ethernet switches can significantly improve the way renewable energy generation is managed. More News 1/28/2026 Meet Altos: The Wi-Fi 7 Router Invited to Your Living Room 1/21/2026 Managed vs unmanaged switches: choose the right fit 1/20/2026 Password Security Standards – Best Practices to Protect your Devices Energy Optimisation with Teltonika Networks Ethernet Switches 1 May 2024 The process of shifting energy generation to renewable sources, such as solar power, is underway, though it necessitates the integration of IoT and network connectivity. Teltonika Networks Ethernet switches can be your best decision when it comes to Internet distribution to the endpoints of your solution, but this begs the question: should you opt for unmanaged or managed switches? The global energy crisis has reached its all-time high . With figures of increased prices , unpredictable weather conditions, and political divisions escalating exponentially since 2021, every energy company reliant on oil, gas, or coal for power generation faces a critical question: what should it do? THE UNIVERSAL CHALLENGE THAT ENERGY COMPANIES FACE Although nuances and exceptions exist within the energy sector, the vast majority of companies involved face similar significant challenges , including deteriorating infrastructure, overconsumption, and energy waste. This is why a shift toward renewable energy sources such as solar panels is accelerating, with a focus on gaining more comprehensive control over the energy production process. This new approach towards energy generation and management enables companies to offer a much more sustainable and effective alternative for a reliable and ongoing energy supply, taking into account individual needs and power consumption habits. This is where the implementation of IoT is inevitable. ENERGY SECTOR + IOT = THE INEVITABLE FUTURE IoT solutions are known for being well thought out in order to maximise their potential across varying domains, including the energy sector . But how so? IoT provides an array of tools and technologies that improve the ways energy companies boost their operational efficiency, reliability, and optimisation. This is particularly evident as companies shift their infrastructure from traditional fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. However, given IoT solutions’ critical dependence on the Internet, devices that equip them with connectivity and its distribution, like Ethernet switches, are crucial to pay attention to. Otherwise, investing in unreliable devices might increase operational risks and potential energy facility downtime, jeopardising the energy infrastructure’s stability and security. Ultimately, this oversight could result in even greater costs. Unreliable or low-quality networking devices can increase the risk of prolonged connectivity disruptions, leading to a significant loss of valuable data that is necessary for informed decision-making. This situation results in businesses being unable to adhere to service level agreements (SLAs), as they no longer have proof of uninterrupted site operation. Consequently, these businesses may become less profitable, especially in the context of long-term contracts. LET ETHERNET SWITCHES BE IN YOUR FAVOUR Teltonika Networks offers an array of trustworthy routers , modems, and gateways that lead to uninterrupted network connectivity. However, our Ethernet switches deserve just as much emphasis when considering the network distribution and the scaling of IoT solutions meant to improve energy optimisation. Teltonika Networks Ethernet switches have been designed to be affordable while delivering the highest quality made to last a long time, even in the most challenging environments. Now, depending on your needs, you might require unmanaged or managed switches. If you’re still unsure which to choose, the Magic and Power Behind Ethernet Switches article presents which type of device might be a better fit for your solution. But to keep it short and simple, it essentially boils down to the complexity of your network infrastructure as well as whether you need remote management and granular control. WHERE UNMANAGED SWITCHES THRIVE Unmanaged switches are plug-and-play and don’t require any configurations to run. In fact, their primary objective is to extend Internet support to a bigger number of devices within IoT solutions. This is why unmanaged switches, like our TSW200 and TSW210 , are typically employed in simple networking environments. The necessity for merely Internet connectivity often prevails in small-scale solar panel energy installations or off-grid solar systems, where access and control of endpoints isn’t necessary. Additionally, unmanaged switches are often the go-to option for cases when budget constraints are a significant consideration, as such switches are most commonly cheaper than managed switches. A great example of employing an unmanaged switch in a similar environment can be seen in the Ethernet Switch for Solar Farms & Solar Energy Solutions use case. Here, the Teltonika Networks TSW210 Ethernet switch is deployed to provide network connectivity to all solar panels while enabling the transmission of data to a remote monitoring centre. This way, the 8-port switch helps to ensure that the solar farm’s operational efficiency is maintained consistently. WHAT ABOUT MANAGED SWITCHES? The advantages of solar energy are evident, leading to the growing integration of complex, large-scale solar systems. And while this sounds promising, it faces greater challenges over strong network connectivity support and is more often than not in need of granular management of each component within the system’s network. This need stems from the fact that larger solar panel farms are employed to supply energy to critical infrastructures, where an unreliable power supply and potential outages could result in significant financial losses or even pose a risk to human lives . Therefore, in situations where operational efficiency is paramount, a network infrastructure that ensures strong connectivity and granular management is key. This is where managed switches play a significant role. Managed 8-port switches, such as the TSW202 and TSW212 , are extremely relevant in the context of large-scale renewable energy farms, offering advanced management capabilities for every system endpoint. Such Ethernet switches enable advanced control over aspects like network segmentation and VLAN establishment. This greatly enhances how Internet support and data transmission from endpoints, like solar panels, to the network’s management control centre, is handled. Managed switches enable you to prioritise from which endpoint you’ll be receiving information first and facilitate connectivity redundancy. This means that in the event of an accident leading to one switch’s failure, another managed switch can seamlessly take over its endpoints, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity. In terms of managed switches for smart grid implementation, the TSW202 and TSW212 switches’ superiority becomes even more evident. Since our managed switches support multiple industrial communication protocols, like Profinet , they can transmit granular data in real-time speeds, which are integral in enhancing the control and flexibility of grid operations and their energy production process optimisation. READY TO TRANSITION TO RENEWABLE ENERGY GENERATION? Moving towards sustainable energy generation is in the forecast of the energy sector, but it comes with many questions and concerns.
