  • RUT271 & RUT976 5G Routers: Entering a RedCap 5G World

RUT271 and RUT976 cellular RedCap 5G routers are here to bridge the gap between 4G and full-capacity 5G networks. Read this article to find out how. More News 1/28/2026 Meet Altos: The Wi-Fi 7 Router Invited to Your Living Room 1/21/2026 Managed vs unmanaged switches: choose the right fit 1/20/2026 Password Security Standards – Best Practices to Protect your Devices RUT271 & RUT976 5G Routers: Entering a RedCap 5G World 6 November 2024 Teltonika is excited to introduce the RUT271 and RUT976 cellular RedCap 5G routers. These mobile routers are here to bridge the gap between 4G and full-capacity 5G, letting you leverage key 5G capabilities such as low latency and high capacity—at affordable pricing. Teltonika’s networking product portfolio features an extensive selection of 4G routers, as well as a growing selection of 5G routers, such as the recently launched RUTM51 . While none would argue that 5G is the future, exactly how your industry should take full advantage of the many benefits of 5G isn’t quite as clear-cut. As a result, not everyone is ready to jump ship before feeling confident that the value gained from 5G outweighs the cost of transitioning your infrastructure. That’s understandable, but here’s our question—what if you could have the best of both worlds? A more affordable version of 5G that lets you take advantage on the benefit you need, without paying extra for the benefits your IoT solutions have no use for? This innovation is ready to rumble, and its name is RedCap. To understand it and its value, we first need to understand why it was needed in the first place. Why RedCap Exists: The Friction Between 5G & IoT You see, 5G as a communication technology is not quite a single, unified standard, but rather a spectrum of technologies. The first section of this spectrum to establish itself was 5G New Radio (5G NR), which is what most people associate with 5G. Within 5G NR are three types: low-band, mid-band, and high-band. Here’s a quick summary: Low-band 5G operates below the 1 GHz frequency band and offers broad coverage and better penetration, but at lower speeds. Mid-band 5G, the most widely-used category, operates between 1 GHz and 6 GHz and offers a better balance of coverage and speed. High-band 5G operates above the 24 GHz band and provides speed and capacity, but with limited range and penetration. Each of these three types is suitable for different areas of applications, which are standardised as massive Machine Type Communication (mMTC), enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), and ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communication (uRLLC). Without getting into too much detail, mMTC focuses on connecting a large number of end devices over wide area, eMBB focuses on providing high throughput, and uRLLC focuses on low latency. To summarise their relationships in very broad strokes, we can grossly generalise that mMTC is best-served by low-band 5G, eMBB by mid-band 5G, and uRLLC by high-band 5G. The problem is that these neat categories aren’t a great fit for the world of IoT. Your networking solution may and often will want to prioritise networking features that fall outside of these divisions, and will be left with no 5G router accurately meeting their needs. On top of that, because all three categories differ but overlap in functionality under the spectrum of 5G NR, this technology is very complex: it requires sophisticated network infrastructure, advanced hardware, and support for multiple deployment scenarios. As you can imagine, with greater complexity comes a higher price. RedCap 5G: Higher Flexibility & Lower Cost The answer is 5G NR-Light, also known as RedCap 5G. No, not the mushrooms, and not even the Anglo-Scottish goblins, but Reduced Capability 5G. In essence, RedCap 5G occupies a more flexible space between the 5G NR divisions discussed above. RedCap 5G reduces complexity, making it a more suitable technology for IoT applications, while keeping the greater flexibility of 5G NR. However, it’s important to note that it supports only standalone (SA) 5G architecture, and does not support non-standalone (NSA). In practice, RedCap 5G offers 5G-calibur low latency while keeping capacity high and complexity low. And because it is low, RedCap’s pricing is also lower. This finally brings us back to the RUT271 and RUT976 5G routers—Teltonika’s first cellular RedCap 5G routers. Let’s dive in. Under the RedCap Hood: Key Features of RUT271 & RUT976 The RUT271 and RUT976 5G routers are comparable in many ways to their older cousins: the RUT241 and RUT956 4G routers. The difference, of course, is RedCap 5G. Mobile and wireless communication These cellular RedCap devices both feature 5G sub-6 GHz SA communication and are backward compatible with LTE Cat 4. In terms of speed, you can expect up to 223 Mbps when operating in 5G Redcap, and up to 150 Mbps when operating in 4G. In addition, these mobile routers boast Wi-Fi 4 and higher wireless end device capacity, with the RUT271 supporting up to 50 end devices and the RUT976 supporting up to 100. Protocols & security These 5G routers are comparable with their support of numerous key industrial protocols, such as such as Modbus TCP , MQTT , and DNP3, and are equipped with security feature to safeguard your 5G networks, including authentication methods, VLANs, and support of industrial VPN services, such as ZeroTier , WireGuard, Stunnel, IPsec, DMVPN, and SSTP. Compact & durable Both devices are encased in sturdy aluminium housing with plastic panels, enabling them to withstand extreme temperatures from -40 °C to 75 °C and humidity ranging from 10% to 90%, non-condensing. They are both compact devices, but their dimensions differ. The RUT271 measures 83 x 25 x 74 mm, while the RUT976 110 x 50 x 100 mm. Network redundancy The RUT976 isn’t larger for no reason, of course, which brings us to how these 5G routers are different. First, while both devices feature auto-failover and other switching scenarios, ensuring network redundancy, the RUT976 has dual SIM slots while the RUT271 has a single slot. Physical interfaces The RUT271 has two 10/100 RJ45 ports, a digital input and a digital output. The RUT976, on the other hand, has a four 10/100 RJ45 ports, an RS232 port, an RS485 port, and a USB 2.0 port. It also has an additional seven I/Os of varying types, making it a more versatile device. RUT976: GNSS Lastly, the RUT976 5G router boasts GNSS functionality for location services and time synchronisation—an integral feature for industrial IoT solutions in which trackability is a must. RedCap 5G Deployment & Use Cases To recap, RedCap 5G technology excels at providing the low latency and high capacity you can expect from 5G, while maintaining speeds more comparable to 4G—resulting in a lower price point and reliable performance under a high density of connected devices. One class of application for this makeup are industrial IoT solutions with real-time data transmission and a large number of end devices within a private network. An example can be found in the intricate world of smart waste management— a market valued at $2.2 billion in 2023 and projected to reach $8.3 billion by 2032, growing at a CAGR of 15.6%. Solutions in this sector involve smart trash cans equipped with sensors which detect a given bin’s load in real-time, allowing for optimised waste collection schedules and operations. This efficiency is enabled via the connectivity of the RUT271 RedCap 5G router. There is more depth to how this works, of course, so check out this use case for more details. We cannot discuss the benefits of 5G-calibur low latency without also discussing its potential in manufacturing solutions. In a study forecasting sales enabled by 5G, manufacturing was the leading industry—estimated to reach $4,771 billion by 2035. For comparison, 2 nd place went to the information and telecommunications sector, estimated to reach $1,493 billion—less than a third of manufacturing’s projected sales. The reason for this is quite simple: manufacturing has the most to gain from 5G capabilities, which can ensure peak efficiency in any automation, predictive maintenance, and Industry 4.0 operations. Not as a result of ultra-high cellular speeds and throughput, but of low latency and high capacity. With the RUT976 RedCap 5G router, there’s no need to overspend on the full spectrum of 5G capabilities to achieve its trademark low latency. Check out this use case to see how this device enables innovative manufacturing solutions—affordably. Of course, these are but a couple of myriad applications these RedCap 5G routers can enable seamlessly. The full scope is far wider, and full of the promise of RedCap: minimised latency and complexity, and maximised capacity and affordability! Will You Brave the RedCap 5G World? • THE FUTURE OF ENERGY IoT

Explore the transformative role of IoT in energy, driving efficiency and sustainability for your networking solutions. More News 1/28/2026 Meet Altos: The Wi-Fi 7 Router Invited to Your Living Room 1/21/2026 Managed vs unmanaged switches: choose the right fit 1/20/2026 Password Security Standards – Best Practices to Protect your Devices THE FUTURE OF ENERGY IoT 4 October 2022 This past August, the annual inflation in the eurozone hit a record 9.1% . Many factors contribute to this, with the current political climate and its effects on soaring energy prices being one of the primary ones. Predictions for the coming winter of 2022-2023 range between grim and hopeful, with some estimating it will last several winters , and others claiming the energy crisis is likely to be solved . Regardless of what ends up actually happening, the turmoil itself is bound to continue to negatively impact inflation. In the world of IoT, we talk about a shiny future of sci-fi-like digital twins and near-instantaneous data transmission. These are all amazing in their own right, but for families facing the challenge of affording to heat their home in the winter, or businesses struggling to keep up with the price of utilities, these technologies seem irrelevant. The bigger picture – that of climate change and its looming shadow over all markets and sectors, seems less pressing. But these technologies are especially relevant to those families, both for the near future and the far one. It is evident that the energy sector must step up its game to avoid future energy crises, and a big part of that is developing and implementing IoT solutions that not only enhance energy efficiency but establish a safety net toward 100% sustainability. With that in mind, let’s have a look at the current numbers and see where the sector is heading. OUT OF THE COLD Let’s start with the basics. Global energy demand rose by 3.4% so far in 2022 – which is less than the estimated 3%. A similar growth rate is expected for 2023, and the general trend is for a slowing down of energy demand. Annual renewable capacity has grown by 6% in 2021, despite the pandemic, and is expected to grow by 8% in 2022. In other words, demand is slowing while capacity is growing. On the finance side of things, the energy market was valued at 168.57 billion in 2020 and is expected to reach 298.26 billion by 2026 – a CAGR of 10%. Within this span, several factors will push and pull the market. The pandemic already affected it significantly, and a shift towards renewable, natural resources like solar and wind energy is continuing to break annual records and reallocate government funds away from oil and coal and towards expanding infrastructure to keep renewable energy capacity growing. This need for more and better infrastructure is where IoT comes in. While its growth rate in the energy market differs from region to region, with APAC and India at the front and LATAM, Africa, and the middle east at the back, the overall global picture is that of growth. In particular, the implementation of smart meters for more efficient monitoring and management of energy flow is the key selling point IoT brings to the energy sector. You may think this isn’t a particularly ground-breaking technology, but this has a “many droplets make an ocean” effect on how energy is used. This IoT-powered energy efficiency will cascade into many different layers of the energy market. From the solar farm energy grids all the way to the end client – the family warming its home in the winter or charging its electric vehicle . From head to tail of this energy journey, everyone gets to make a more informed, data-driven decision on their energy consumption thanks to those meters. The end result is a more stable ratio between supply and demand, lower prices, and a greener future. AND INTO THE LIGHT So yes, we can expect the coming winter to be a cold and expensive one. We might expect the next few winters to be similar, though it’s too early to tell. But the future as a whole seems promising and hopeful as long as we keep integrating IoT in the energy sector and continue the shift away from non-renewables. When things look dark and the temperatures drop, that’s when the northern lights shine the brightest. What does this mean for those of us in the world of IoT? There are many reasons to invest our time and effort into growing our presence and positive impact in the energy sector, and a growing pool of potential clients whose need for smart meters and connectivity is only going to increase. It’s up to us to learn and become experts in this field, and reach out to those potential clients with news about where their sector is heading and why collaboration is not just a cherry on top, but the whole ice cream. This isn’t only the concern of wind farm owners or hydropower management companies. Managing power in a building, be it residential or commercial, can and should enjoy the same benefits IoT provides. The same goes for electric vehicle charging stations, and many more. Keep an eye open for this sector, engage with it, and become its light in the dark – this is what we at Teltonika Networks are doing. If you’re not sure where to start, we recommend this brand-new use case about how IoT helps provide real-time energy data in sustainable production lines! LIKE THIS STORY? Share it with friends! • THE INAUGURAL TECH SUMMIT OF TELTONIKA NETWORKS

Teltonika Networks recently hosted the very first Tech Summit, presenting exclusive opportunities to engage with our engineers and discover our roadmap. Read more about it. More News 1/28/2026 Meet Altos: The Wi-Fi 7 Router Invited to Your Living Room 1/21/2026 Managed vs unmanaged switches: choose the right fit 1/20/2026 Password Security Standards – Best Practices to Protect your Devices THE INAUGURAL TECH SUMMIT OF TELTONIKA NETWORKS 7 November 2023 Just recently, Teltonika Networks hosted its inaugural, two-day Tech SummIT, dedicating it to the engineering heart of IoT and fostering a close relationship with our engineering community. This summit focused on both the software and hardware of Teltonika Networks products, underpinning our strive for the highest quality and security standards. The Tech SummIT featured a series of workshops, presentations, and the roadmap of Teltonika Networks’ strategic vision. Attendees also got a behind-the-scenes look at our manufacturing facilities, and an exclusive Q&A session with our CEO, CTO, and key people from R&D and manufacturing. While not everyone had the opportunity to join us, we want to give an opportunity for all to delve into the essence of the event and see the bigger picture. So, without further ado, let’s explore the facets of what was showcased at the Teltonika Networks Tech SummIT! RutOS is more than a Lithuanian flower Inspired by a Lithuanian flower – rūta – the presentation of RutOS was undoubtedly one of the biggest standouts of the summit, delivered by our Head of Technical Support in the Middle East, Vidas Kačerauskas. He provided an insightful overview of RutOS's evolution and the intricacies involved in its security facets. The presentation emphasised a core principle of Teltonika Networks: we develop products based on the needs of our clients. In fact, we often communicate with clients when developing a product or feature, taking their feedback and needs into account during the implementation process. This ensures they receive precisely what they’re searching for in the IoT market. The history and security of RutOS Reflecting on past iterations of RutOS, you’ll find that Teltonika Networks devices were once operated on individual operating systems rather than one. This phase was short-lived, however, as we opted to design a unified operating system. This shift aimed to enhance our own efficiency, concentrate resources on developing expansive features for a broader device portfolio, and simplify the user experience for our clients. A single operating system naturally facilitates quick and easy updates across fleets of devices, as opposed to individual systems with sometimes varying features or technologies. We also outlined the rigorous security measures our research and development teams implement during each new version of both RutOS and RMS. Applying a secure software development lifecycle ( SDLC ) approach when working on our software development cycle did not feel sufficient, so our teams have added an internal cybersecurity training measure to ensure the highest level of proficiency of each member. With such an extensive series of actions and processes we undertake when perfecting each RutOS feature, rest assured we’re committed to safeguarding your solution from any data leaks or breaches. Vidas also provided a unique chance for IoT engineers to take a glimpse into the future of RutOS. By the presentation’s end, they had a sneak peek at the then-upcoming version 7.05 . Working less with RMS sounds nice Indeed, it sounds nice because it is nice! RMS product manager, Tomas Mikolaitis, presented our IoT cloud platform, which is currently hosted on Amazon Web Services ( AWS ). The prime focus of Tomas’s presentation was showing how much time this platform can save, and how truly convenient it is to attain remote management and monitoring capabilities for your networking solutions. We often focus on these exact benefits, which, to be fair, are huge. However, the presentation also highlighted how many more capabilities there are to be had with RMS, comparing it to not just as a tool, but a whole toolbox available right at your fingertips. RMS can act as a FOTA, Proxy, or VPN server, and can be used as a device configuration and onboarding tool. This is an especially user-friendly benefit for networking solutions that must maintain flexibility over their fluctuating scalability. Another benefit is that RMS can be used for shared management by granular role and access assignment to each given user. Tomas added that these services can be purchased by credits or packages , with the option to allocate them to specific services instead of the entire platform. That’s right. Of all the great functions RMS has, the most important note to make here is that you’re not obliged to purchase all its services at once; you can choose specific ones that best meet your needs. Partner presentations and the roadmap We were delighted to invite our partners from Bondix Intelligence and QuWireless to demonstrate their products and services. With that, they also showcased how our devices seamlessly integrate with Bondix Intelligence's bonding services as well as QuWireless antennas. The first day of the Tech SummIT concluded with a presentation on our strategic vision for networking products. Delivered by Mantas Čižauskas, it offered engineers an exclusive glimpse into what lies ahead, including some upcoming products we’re sure you’ll love to see in the near future! Beyond presentations During the Tech Summit, our emphasis was also directed towards workshops. These showcased a range of topics such as smart traffic management, public transport connectivity, traffic split and failover, small office infrastructure, and RMS as the ultimate management tool. These workshops were a perfect opportunity for each engineer in the audience to have one-on-one discussions with Teltonika Networks engineers, diving deep into presented use cases as well as exploring any other topic at the forefront of their minds. We really wanted to show the full picture of what lies behind Teltonika Networks, which meant an exclusive tour around our manufacturing facilities here in Lithuania! At the manufacturing facility, attending engineers encountered not only the high-precision SMT lines and advanced robotic systems that bring our devices to life, but also the skilled professionals who ensure top-notch quality at every stage of production. On top of that, we officially finished the Tech SummIT with one of a kind Q&A session, featuring Teltonika Networks CEO, Giedrius Kukauskas, and CTO, Mantas Čižauskas, the Head of the Molėtai Technology Centre, Paulius Rutkauskas, alongside the Head of Programmers, Gintautas Beržunskis, and Process Engineer, Žygimantas Šlapikas. Engineers had the freedom to pose any question, ranging from "What does 'success' mean to you?" to intricate ones like, "What semiconductors do you intend to manufacture at the Teltonika High-Tech Hill, and how will that influence the product features and availability?" These insightful questions sparked enriching discussions among the audience and Q&A hosts, which can be very rarely experienced anywhere else. Inspired to do more The core essence of the Teltonika Networks Tech SummIT was to provide a platform for our engineer partners to collaborate with Teltonika Networks engineers. It also served as a stage for our own team to showcase the projects they’ve contributed to, bringing them to their current achievements. Following this event, we feel deeply appreciative of our partners, clients, and especially the people of Teltonika Networks who made this summit not only possible – but truly remarkable. The inspiration drawn from this event has us rest assured this won’t be the last one. LIKE THIS STORY? Share it with friends! Facebook X (Twitter) LinkedIn Copy link GOT A QUESTION?
