5G routers for mobile connectivity in live events
Highlights
✔ Live event production environments demand stable and predictable connectivity despite constantly changing locations, congested shared networks, and limited control over venue provided infrastructure.
✔ In response to these challenges, Mercenray Audio developed a purpose-built mobile connectivity platform that enables live production systems to operate independently of venue networks during events.
✔ At the core of the solution, four RUTM50 5G routers provide high performance cellular connectivity with built-in resilience, adaptability, and automatic failover to support mission critical live workflows.
Network limitations in short term live production deployments
Live event production environments place exceptional demands on network connectivity. Audio, video, lighting, and broadcast systems increasingly rely on stable, predictable internet access to support time-critical workflows.
These systems are often deployed in constantly changing locations such as concert venues, exhibition halls, outdoor stages, and temporary installations, where fixed-line connectivity is unavailable, impractical, or unsuitable for short-term use.
While most venues offer connectivity typically through 4G LTE and Wi-Fi, these networks frequently fall short of production requirements. Shared infrastructure is often congested, introduces high latency, and provides limited control over performance characteristics.
Dedicated wired connections can mitigate some of these challenges, but they are often costly, require advance coordination, and still cannot guarantee consistent performance during peak usage periods. For production teams responsible for live, mission-critical operations, these constraints introduce significant uncertainty.
Network conditions also vary widely between locations. Cellular coverage, available frequency bands, and network load differ from venue to venue, requiring a connectivity approach that can be rapidly assessed and adapted on site. Production teams must be able to evaluate local conditions, select appropriate networks, and deploy connectivity quickly without relying on local infrastructure.
Further complexity arises from the range of users involved in live productions. Core production systems require stable and predictable network, while backstage staff, artists, and event-related users just need internet access. Managing these parallel requirements within a temporary deployment presents an additional operational challenge.
In response to these realities, Mercenray Audio, North American specialists in temporary, high-capacity infrastructures for trade shows and live productions, developed a purpose-built mobile connectivity platform tailored to the unique demands of live events.
Topology
A scalable mobile connectivity solution powered by four 5G routers
The mobile connectivity platform enables audio, video, lighting, and broadcast production systems to operate independently of venue-provided networks.
At its core, four RUTM50 cellular 5G routers are mounted in a custom built, deployable rack. These FCC-certified routers are optimized for North American deployments and support ultra-high 5G throughput. When 5G coverage is limited or unavailable, the routers automatically fall back to 4G LTE Cat 19 or Cat 18, ensuring continuous operation without requiring any changes to system architecture or workflow.
Each Teltonika 5G router operates as an independent cellular endpoint within the rack, establishing its own active connection. By maintaining multiple parallel uplinks, the system avoids dependence on any single cellular path and forms a resilient network architecture well suited to live production environments where network conditions can shift rapidly.
Once on site, technicians assess the surrounding cellular environment and configure each 5G router to operate on the most suitable frequency band. Band locking is applied to keep each device attached to its selected cell, preventing unnecessary handovers between overlapping networks. This controlled radio configuration ensures predictable network behavior throughout the event.
All four RUTM50 5G cellular routers connect to a dedicated load balancer integrated into the rack. Rather than aggregating bandwidth into a single logical connection, the system uses load switching to distribute traffic across available cellular links. Individual data streams are routed through separate uplinks, supporting consistent performance when multiple simultaneous workflows are active.
Dual SIM capability on each router enables automatic failover and backup WAN scenarios. If signal quality degrades or a link failure occurs, traffic can be rerouted without manual intervention. For live audio, video, lighting, and broadcast workflows, this redundancy is critical to maintaining uninterrupted operation.
From the load balancer, wired Ethernet delivers network access directly to production equipment, including audio consoles, video systems, lighting controllers, and broadcast control devices. In parallel, Wi-Fi connectivity is provided for production staff, backstage personnel, artists, and other event related users.
