- Interactive Remotely Controlled Playground
Read how Teltonika Networks industrial cellular router RUT956 provides connectivity for an interactive remotely controlled playground system IoT solution! Interactive Remotely Controlled Playground System SUMMARY The World Health Organization has reported that more than a quarter of the world’s population is insufficiently physically active. In fact, the levels of physical activity have not increased since 2001. These changes are driven by motorized transport, increasing screen time and a sedentary lifestyle. The WHO (World Health Organization) has even prepared an official plan to increase physical activity across communities. So, what can we do to achieve that? CHALLENGE One way to make outdoor activities more enticing is to integrate IoT technologies to bring more interactive elements. Some technological interactivity can be implemented to enhance the experience, as people naturally like to compete with each other and be entertained. However, each solution has some essential conditions that need to be met — power and connectivity. A playground with IoT elements needs to have access to the internet to have all the software updated and send data to keep things working in an orderly fashion as the environment in which it needs to operate can be pretty harsh. PARTNER PlayAlive is a Danish company that has been creating innovative play solutions since 2008. They focus on integrating smart technology for interactive playground systems, and their goal is to make the play areas more engaging and incite movement outside. PlayAlive’s products are already implemented worldwide in such regions as the USA, Australia, Asia and most of Europe. SOLUTION PlayAlive has designed a Running Light pacer system that helps increase physical activity in outdoor zones by introducing interactive elements. Their smart solution consists of LED lights, a display unit that acts as the game controller and sensors. You can choose between several different racing game types. The run timer starts and stops as sensors detect someone passing the finish and start lines. While running, depending on the game type, you have to follow the LED lights that move beside the running track. This solution gets its connectivity thanks to Teltonika Networks RUT956 industrial cellular router. RUT956 provides primary connectivity for the display screen while enabling Wi-Fi for any other elements not directly cabled to the central unit by a physical wired connection. All the other modules connect to the router through its I/O connections. Furthermore, RMS enables remote monitoring, gathering statistics and powering on or off various system components. Also, RUT956 gives remote access to the control units, which can then change the available games, volume, and other settings. TOPOLOGY BENEFITS Multiple RUT956 I/O connections enable remote powering up or down. The industrial cellular router can shrug off most extreme environmental factors like temperature and moisture. RUT956 features a dual SIM slot for alternate operator and failover. RMS allows to remotely update the software, firmware and collect analytical data. WHY TELTONIKA NETWORKS? PlayAlive chose Teltonika Networks device due to its robust design that could withstand harsh weather conditions, offering all the necessary connections needed to enable their IoT solution. - Continuous Water Quality Monitoring & Analysis
Discover how Teltonika Networks' TRB140 IoT gateway revolutionises water quality monitoring: compact and reliable connectivity for continuous analysis. Continuous Water Quality Monitoring & Analysis SUMMARY Human ingenuity and innovation seem to have no limits. We went to the moon, took the first photo of a black hole, and invented the cupcake. But none of these would be possible if it weren’t for a basic resource many of us often take for granted: clean, drinkable water. When you think about it, it isn’t obvious that the water coming out of your kitchen’s tap is safe to drink. Our ingenuity has the significant byproduct of pollution, and the difference between quenching your thirst and low- key developing cancer is one a lot of research and quality management is done to keep separate. How do you know your water is safe to drink? CHALLENGE Generally speaking, determining the drinkability of any water source involves testing its chemical composition, such as its pH (acidity), whether it contains toxins such as microplastics, and other variables such as temperature. A qualified scientist takes a sample from a water source every so often, analyzes it, and compares it with the recommended standards of a reputable organization, such as the WHO or the USEPA. If any variable deviates from the standard, the water is deemed undrinkable. If none of them do, you can go ahead and hydrate to your heart’s desire. Easy peasy. Well, not so fast. How often is “every so often”? If pH was low yesterday, for example, can we really be sure it’s still low today? Is this a risk we can afford to take? Water quality data is too important to be periodically tested. It needs to be monitored continuously. This means our scientist’s task must instead be carried out by machines, which don’t experience work-disrupting needs such as “feeling tired” How complicated would it be to implement such an automated system, and just how costly would it be? SOLUTION The simple answer is: not that much. The continuous sampling and calculation can be done by a sensor equipped with a measurement processing unit. That sensor would need an internet connection to send the data to a server for storage and send alerts to personnel whenever the analysis finds a critical deviation from the acceptable standards. When the water source is a relatively urban area with good cell reception, that internet connection is easy to establish. When it’s in the middle of nowhere, where only wild animals tread – not so much. This is when an industrial gateway, such as our TRB140, must be included in the setup. This gateway is very small and boasts an OpenWRT-based operating system, making it a highly customizable and easy-to-install Swiss army knife of a connectivity device. Compatibility with our Remote Management System (RMS) enables the TRB140 to be managed remotely, a crucial feature for use in remote water sources that would otherwise require a substantial amount of traveling and related costs to operate. TOPOLOGY BENEFITS The TRB140 provides a stable and reliable cellular internet connection at an affordable cost without adding setup complexity. Designed with flexibility and compatibility in mind, this device is small in size and includes an OpenWRT-based operating system, allowing it to fit perfectly in a variety of solutions that struggle with applying more conventional, less flexible devices. RMS compatibility makes this gateway shine even brighter in IoT solutions in remote locations while including extra security features such as SMS control, firewall, VPN, and IPsec. WHY TELTONIKA NETWORKS? It’s easy to take certain aspects of modern life for granted. It’s a sign that things are working seamlessly behind the curtain, so much so that we simply get used to it. But it isn’t obvious – it’s the result of a seamless IoT solution working perfectly. This seamlessness is a feature of our device portfolio and one we keep in mind from the very beginning of design to the last measure of quality assurance. When you choose Teltonika Networks, you choose that seamlessness. LIKE THIS STORY? Share it with friends! Facebook X (Twitter) LinkedIn Copy link GOT A QUESTION? We’re here to help! - HOW TO FIX Wi-Fi DEAD SPOTS WITH Wi-Fi MESH TECHNOLOGY
Learn how to fix Wi-Fi dead spots using Wi-Fi mesh technology with Teltonika Networks cellular routers, enhancing signal for optimal connectivity. More News 12/3/2025 RutOS 7.19 firmware update: the latest enhancements 12/3/2025 Teltonika Apps : convenience at your fingertips 11/26/2025 Top IoT Security Risk or Why You Must Update Router Firmware HOW TO FIX Wi-Fi DEAD SPOTS WITH Wi-Fi MESH TECHNOLOGY 4 July 2023 One of the most common concerns people have when figuring out Wi-Fi coverage in their solutions is dead spots that emerge due to weak or no wireless network signal at all. The name might sound ominous, but fear not, as these connectivity voids are far from fatal. In fact, they can be easily fixed with the right networking equipment and technologies like Wi-Fi mesh. As the name suggests, Wi-Fi dead spots are nothing more than areas where a wireless network signal is absent. These areas prevent you from web browsing or sending and uploading data files to another destination. Although Wi-Fi dead spots are generally associated with smart homes and offices, they’re equally prevalent in industrial applications. There, they present a significant challenge when Wi-Fi is needed for data transmission between machinery. In all their diversity, IoT solutions can deal with unique and nuanced troubles that might cause Wi-Fi dead spots. Interestingly enough, both home and industrial IoT sectors tend to face similar obstacles when it comes to Wi-Fi dead spots. WHAT CAUSES Wi-Fi DEAD SPOTS? Among the common issues causing Wi-Fi dead spots, the conditions surrounding the router are generally the most significant. This includes the router’s location and the presence of physical objects that could interrupt or even completely absorb the Wi-Fi signal. Brick or metal materials are notorious for disrupting Wi-Fi spread. This is unfortunate, as those are widely used as reinforcement in building constructions for walls and structural integrity. This factor strongly affects the strategic placement of a router within a building. A poorly-considered location could result in an almost nonexistent wireless signal, owing to problems with signal distribution and interference of physical objects. Much like individuals, networking devices are all different, with each having limitations on how many devices it can support simultaneously and what type of network performance it can manage effectively. So, if you want to avoid Wi-Fi dead spots , it’s crucial to consider the capacity of your networking device to manage network traffic, handle device congestion, and ensure equal distribution of the network among connected devices. HOW TO OVERCOME Wi-Fi DEAD SPOTS? While we aren’t in the position to offer advice on permanently altering your building’s structure, trust us – there’s absolutely no need to resort to such measures. The technology of Wi-Fi mesh and compatible networking devices can distribute Wi-Fi signals throughout your entire building just as efficiently. In conjunction with networking routers or access points , Wi-Fi mesh technology creates internal communication between network endpoints and enables an even network coverage throughout the entire building. However, this internal communication holds a multitude of additional functionalities behind it. WHY SHOULD I USE Wi-Fi MESH? With devices like the Teltonika Networks RUTX10 industrial router , the Wi-Fi mesh technology allows you to configure Wi-Fi nodes and use backup configuration to apply the same settings across multiple connected devices within the mesh network. This not only ensures uniform settings across different nodes, but also simplifies the overall management process. It also enables you to have greater control over your network’s continuous performance by establishing a network architecture that facilitates alternative traffic rerouting in cases where one or more devices go down. At the same time, Wi-Fi mesh allows devices to automatically select the most optimal channel for each endpoint to operate, minimizing the chances of interference and congestion. HOW TO CONFIGURE Wi-Fi MESH ON TELTONIKA NETWORKS ROUTERS? First and foremost, nearly all Teltonika Networks routers feature Wi-Fi mesh technology, with the exception of RUT300, RUTX08, and RUTX09, which don’t support this technology. Our Wiki Knowledge Base provides a comprehensive example of Wi-Fi mesh configuration . Complete with step-by-step instructions, this guide showcases how you can enable this technology using RutOS , our in-house operating system that powers all our gateways and routers. This example covers a configuration for both mesh gateway, a primary node that acts as a DHCP server and bridge between WAN and LAN networks , responsible for managing and routing traffic between the two networks, and the rest of the routers involved in the mesh, acting as regular nodes. The configuration is then followed with a couple of examples of how you can test whether you did the configuration correctly. First is “ping testing”, where an ICMP echo request is sent from the mesh gateway to a device connected to one of the nodes. The second is the tried-and-trusted stroll around the coverage area with a connected device, checking for consistent and robust Internet signal strength. Wi-Fi MESH IN ACTION If you want to envision how Wi-Fi mesh technology works in practice, we have two great use cases covering smart offices and industrial sectors. The first use case presents how this technology empowers a sustainable office and ensures all network-dependent equipment is supplied with robust and uninterrupted network connectivity. The second use case presents how Wi-Fi mesh technology helps automize industrial and remote warehouses while sustaining each machinery’s flawless performance. LIKE THIS STORY? Share it with friends! In this article, we’ll explore the need for IoT remote device access and control, and the best solution for this need: RMS Connect. RMS Connect is one of the key services of the Teltonika Networks Remote Management System (RMS) – itself a comprehensive remote management tool for IoT devices. In a nutshell, RMS Connect is a centralized hub for engineers and IT administrators to remotely access, manage, and control end devices connected to their fleet of remote IoT devices. By leveraging such a remote device management system, accessing and controlling your fleet of devices and performing IoT device remote tasks is simple and easy. Regardless of the physical location of the devices, you can work on its interface as though you were right there next to it. HOW DOES RMS CONNECT WORK? Similar to a remote management software, RMS Connect acts as a gateway between you and your fleet of end devices wherever they may be. It creates time-limited proxy links that you can enter in a browser, making the interface of the corresponding protocol return to you via RMS Connect. For example: WebUI with HTTP(S), the command line interface with SSH and Telnet, file access with SFTP, and the desktop screen with RDP and VNC. The default expiration time of those links is 45 minutes, but you can select a different option if needed. This feature is implemented for added security to this remote management tool and goes alongside the added encryption of an SSH tunnel. BENEFITS & FEATURES OF RMS CONNECT RMS Connect has many benefits and features to offer. Firstly, using RMS Connect does not require a public IP address , additional Firewall configurations for Teltonika Networks IoT devices, or port forwarding. Automatic configuration for the remote connection to the end device is available for streamlined use. This remote management tool supports the following protocols: HTTP(S), SSH, Telnet, RDP, VNC, and SFTP protocols. Using any of these protocols, you can directly access and control end devices connected to your remote IoT devices using a web browser. RMS Connect also automatically scans your IoT devices and informs you of available default communication ports (22, 23, 80, 443, 3389, 5900). Best of all – you only pay for this service when you use it, and only for the amount of data used! EXAMPLES OF RMS CONNECT IN ACTION If you’re interested in what using RMS Connect looks like in practice, we have a couple of use cases featuring its capabilities that you should definitely check out. One example is a centralized vending machine POS system use case , where RMS Connect and the SSH protocol were used to establish secure remote management with a banking card terminal for IT firmware updates in a remote POS system. Another example is the remote calibration and control of smart traffic lights , in which RMS Connect and the Teltonika Networks RUT240 router were used for providing secure remote management and control capabilities to the traffic lights.
