- Wireless Access Points for Smart Factory Wi-Fi Mesh Network
The Teltonika DAP140 and DAP142 wireless access points enable automation in smart factories. Click here to find out how. Wireless Access Points for Smart Factory Wi-Fi Mesh Network PDF PDF Highlights ✔ In order to leverage automation, smart factories require equipment interconnectivity and network centralisation, which can be costly and complex to implement. ✔ A Wi-Fi mesh network enabled via a fleet of DAP140 and DAP142 wireless access points is the ideal solution—enhancing wireless coverage while supporting up to 50 end devices per access point. ✔ An integrated DIN rail bracket, two RJ45 connectors, and 3-pin power input all make these Wi-Fi mesh access points extra-suitable for industrial applications, while the DAP142’s RS232 port allows it to directly connect to key equipment. The challenge – ready, mesh, go! Industrial automation has never been as widespread and sophisticated as it is today. The global smart factory market size, for example, accounted for $155.62 billion in 2024 and is estimated to surpass $386.36 billion by 2034, growing at a CAGR of 9.52%. A smart factory leverages myriad automation technologies to eliminate human errors, maximise efficiency and productivity, minimise costs, and produce invaluable data with which future optimisation is built upon. The lifeblood of such smart factories is, of course, the interconnectivity of machines. Without it, the moving parts of this innovative orchestra cannot communicate with one another, and automation without communication is, as we all know, no automation at all. As such, robust and reliable connectivity and network centralisation are priority number one. In the context of factories—industrial spaces spanning thousands of sqm—every inch of the facility and the machines therein must be connected. Such a feat cannot be achieved by a single mobile router, but a large fleet of routers would be costly to deploy. Luckily, there is a simpler, more affordable solution: a Wi-Fi mesh network enabled by wireless access points tailor-made for industrial environments. Topology The solution – the mesh magic of wireless access points Kickstarting this industrial IoT solution is Teltonika’s RUT361 mobile router , providing our smart factory network with a source of LTE Cat 6 connectivity, capable of cellular speeds of up to 300Mbps with carrier aggregation. The RUT361 is then connected to a Teltonika DAP140 wireless access point via one of the latter’s 10/100 RJ45 connectors. From there, the access point relays a wireless signal to a fleet of wireless access points deployed strategically across the facility. Specifically, DAP140 and DAP142 industrial access points. The fleet creates a mesh-formation area of wider total coverage that is larger than the sum of its parts. Both of these rugged Wi-Fi access points share myriad features designed for industrial applications, such as Wi-Fi 4, Wi-Fi mesh, and Fast Roaming support. The key difference between them, however, is the DAP142’s RS232 port—enabling it to directly connect to staple equipment such as robotic arms and HMIs. With each Wi-Fi access point supporting up to 50 end devices, the result is a robust network covering the entire smart factory, leaving no piece of equipment behind. And with network centralisation taken care of, automation is now free to perform its Industry 4.0 magic. In addition, these wireless access points feature an integrated DIN rail bracket for easy mounting, a 3-pin power input, and industrial-grade aluminium housing engineered for the most challenging of industrial environments. In summary, the DAP140 and DAP142 Wi-Fi mesh access points enable a low-cost and low-complexity Wi-Fi mesh network. This network enhances wireless coverage and encompasses all equipment within a smart factory, thus enabling full-fledged automation. When it comes to industrial Wi-Fi mesh networks, the DAP140 and DAP142 are among the best wireless access points for the job. LIKE THIS STORY? Share it with friends! - Multileveled Water Supply Connectivity Solution
The TRB245 and TRB141 IoT gateways enable connectivity for remote water supply systems. Click here to learn how. Multileveled Water Supply Connectivity Solution PDF PDF SUMMARY When water comes out of your faucet, it isn’t magically generated behind your bathroom wall. Instead, it’s connected to a network of pipes leading to a water tank that stores water reserves. But as the tank has a finite amount of space, it can only contain a limited volume of water. A pump station controls water going into the tank and must be activated only when the tank is low on water. Otherwise, the tank will overflow, and too much water will be wasted. When your local water company has dozens of these tanks, how often does it need to check each one to ensure not a single one ever runs of water? CHALLENGE The answer is – too frequently. Each tank delivers water to places with varying usage habits, so the amount of time it takes for the total amount of water to be used naturally varies from tank to tank and from one month to another. Given that, the water company can treat each tank as its own little ecosystem and have an approximate idea of when it would need refilling. But this is water we’re talking about. Without water, we can’t quench our thirst, take a shower, do the dishes, or flush the toilets. An ‘approximate idea’ simply isn’t good enough, but regularly checking each tank is far from the ideal use of human resources. Fortunately, this problem is solvable with the help of telemetry-focused machines. The only problem is – water tanks have a thick exterior and a wet interior. How do you facilitate effective data communication in such conditions? PARTNER Eneldat is a Kosovar innovator and provider of smart solutions in the fields of automation and energy. From design, development, and delivery of equipment to the installation and integration of energy management systems, Eneldat takes care of the entire process on both the software and hardware ends. SOLUTION When approached by the water supply company of the Gjakova region in Southwest Kosovo to solve this issue with its 39 sets of water tanks and pump stations, Eneldat put a couple of our cellular gateways to great use. The first one, the TRB245, was installed in an IP66 panel in the water tank. This gateway is connected to a switch that turns on whenever the water level goes below a certain threshold, and wirelessly alerts the pump station by sending an SMS message. On the pump station side of things, a TRB141 receives the message and activates the pumps until the right amount of water is delivered to the tank, at which point the gateway deactivates them. In addition, an SMS request can be sent to the TRB141 at any time to receive a status report. Both the TRB245 and TRB141 are an excellent fit for this solution, as they support a wide array of different I/Os, including a 230VAC power relay, and allow for remote management at low power consumption. TOPOLOGY BENEFITS Low power consumption and support of a wide range of I/Os make the TRB245 and TRB141 perfect for solutions in remote unmanned sites. Compatibility with Teltonika Networks’ Remote Management System (RMS) allows these cellular gateways to perform entirely remotely and with a secure, custom VPN safeguarding their communication. Industrially designed with rugged aluminum housing and DIN rail mounting options, there’s no risk in utilizing these devices in such a damp environment where every inch of space matters. WHY TELTONIKA NETWORKS? Before Eneldat implemented this solution, the Gjakova water supply company was operating with a nonzero amount of inaccuracy and speculation. Our products helped replace these with accuracy and telemetric certainty, as they often do. Every industry must continuously up its game to dynamic technological standards fitting for our times, making connectivity increasingly integral over time. Our growing portfolio of connectivity devices is sure to help them meet those high standards with ease. LIKE THIS STORY? Share it with friends! Facebook X (Twitter) LinkedIn Copy link GOT A QUESTION? - Connectivity for Circular Battery Energy Storage Systems
EV battery packs at their end-of-life stage can be repurposed into battery energy storage systems. Find out how the Teltonika Networks RUT241 enables this IoT solution. Connectivity for Circular Battery Energy Storage Systems PDF PDF PDF HIGHLIGHTS ✔ Watt4Ever is a Belgian provider of affordable, sustainable, and local battery energy storage systems driven by a circular economy. ✔ To maintain the optimal safety and security of these systems, a network connectivity device must be included in the solution. ✔ Accomplishing this goal is the combination of our RUT241 cellular router and TSW110 Ethernet switch – guaranteeing seamless, uninterrupted data flow between solution and control center THE CHALLENGE – BATTERIES & THERMODYNAMICS According to the first law of thermodynamics, the energy of a closed system must remain constant. It doesn’t increase or decrease. In other words, energy doesn’t go anywhere. The same cannot be said for the battery energy storage market, which does increase in value and growth. This market is expected to grow from $10.88 billion in 2022 to $31.20 billion by 2029 at a CAGR of 16.3%. But just because the market doesn’t obey thermodynamic principles, it doesn’t mean your market activities can’t! One of our Belgian partners, Watt4Ever, dismantles electric vehicle battery packs at their end-of-life stage and gives them a new purpose by developing battery energy storage systems. These upcycled systems come in both low and high-voltage varieties and can scale the number of batteries for any given application required. These can range from small and medium-sized enterprises to warehouses and retail buildings, and more. Watt4Ever ’s energy storage systems ensure that batteries, too, remain constant in the market’s closed system. However, in order to maintain the optimal safety and security of such a solution, it must be able to read variables like temperatures, voltages, inverter phases, and component statuses in real time. If it can do so remotely and send the aggregated data to a cloud server for analysis – even better. How can that be accomplished? With a Teltonika Networks network connectivity device, of course! TOPOLOGY The Solution – A Reliably-Constant System Watt4Ever chose the RUT241 industrial cellular router by Teltonika Networks to establish LTE Cat 4 connectivity for its battery energy storage systems. The router is connected to our TSW110 Ethernet switch via a WAN port and the switch is connected via Ethernet to a number of components. These include a Danfoss inverter for control of the storage system, an HMI for on-site control, a PLC, and a Raspberry PI. These components, along with additional sensors, inverters, and innovative alarm systems, together function as the brain of the battery pack and receive data through the Battery Management System slaves installed on each module in the pack. The data is read by this “brain” using the ModBus industrial protocol. With the connectivity provided by RUT241, that data is then sent to Watt4Ever’s remote monitoring and control platform for further analysis and real-time alerts. For maximum safety and security , the battery energy storage system has three independent communication systems: 4G, LAN, and Wi-Fi. Enabled by the RUT241 router, this ensures a constant and uninterrupted data flow from solution to control center. Bolstering this connectivity safety net is the router’s WAN failover feature, which automatically switches to another available backup connection in case the original connection is interrupted for any reason. For the energy of a closed system to remain constant, that system must be as reliable as possible. This is what Watt4Ever offers with its battery energy storage systems, and is exactly why it chose Teltonika Networks for this solution. LIKE THIS STORY? Share it with friends! If loading and unloading are not managed on time, high financial losses are to be expected. Other crucial indicators to monitor are the temperature and humidity of grains. These factors are essential for safe grain storage, as most of the losses are caused by improper conditions of conservation during the storage stage. The quicker the detection of fluctuation from the norm, the lower the losses. With the scope of growth and fast-pace of the business, there is a clear demand for automation and more efficient monitoring methods. SOLUTION TRB141 gateways are used in every storage unit and connected to the sensors via I/Os. They collect information regarding the fullness, temperature, and humidity of containers. All the data then travels to the Central Management Platform via MQTT protocol. When containers fill up to 50% or 75% point, a sensor will send a signal to the gateway, which will send out an SMS or email warning. This allows for planning and prevents downtime. In the meantime, temperature and humidity sensors monitor these measures accordingly. In case of going over the predetermined values, the sensor sends this information to the gateway, which in turn notifies the system via SMS or email, and triggers the ventilation system to adjust. All these measurements can also be monitored and managed remotely via the Teltonika Networks Remote Management System (RMS). TOPOLOGY BENEFITS Remote management– no need to physically travel to the location for measuring the rates and adjusting systems in case of minor fluctuations. Reliable connectivity - LTE Cat 1 provides reliable connection even in remote or rural areas. Ease of installation – this gateway is designed to be small, lightweight and energy efficient, which gives flexibility to install it almost anywhere. Durable – TRB141 comes in aluminum housing with DIN rail mounting option. I/O – TRB141 offers a wide range of multiple Inputs/Outputs for sensor connectivity and control. WHY Teltonika Networks? - IoT enables remote health monitoring
COVID-19 has caused a crisis, straining hospitals and shutting down clinics, denying other patients access to care. Changes are needed to make the healthcare system sufficient. IoT enables remote health monitoring PDF PDF SUMMARY The World has been stricken with a huge crisis over the past few months with the emergence of COVID-19. While all the hospitals have experienced a massive influx of people infected with the virus and clinics had to shut down, the other patients suffering from various illnesses and disabilities lost their access for sufficient treatment and monitoring. It became apparent that the current healthcare system might be insufficient to handle a challenge of this scope and some changes need to be implemented. CHALLENGE With hospitals getting fully occupied and other healthcare establishments getting temporarily shut down, it has become risky if not impossible for patients to get the necessary care. With healthcare professionals getting sick and the government imposed safety requirements of isolation, it became obvious that it is essential to implement remote healthcare monitoring solutions to save lives. While various companies have been working on a range of tools and platforms to make such remote healthcare monitoring possible, the crisis of COVID-19 highlighted a problem that has been previously overlooked in many cases. The implementation of social distancing has led a lot of organizations, education, and government establishments to conduct their activities purely online. Such a sudden change imposed great connectivity issues and therefore the systems which were working sufficiently until recent days, have become significantly less reliable and inefficient. SOLUTION One of our clients has recently been affected by a similar challenge. Their initial process seemed quite uncomplicated. A user would receive an arm-band collecting data on various health metrics. The information would then be sent to the Cloud and processed to view results via a custom app for the users and system operators. However, the practice has shown that the process had hiccups. Some of the clients appeared to not have a fast and stable Internet connection, the application did not always work well with their routers and the setting-up procedure was too complicated for the elderly or not as tech-savvy users. Working together with our client we developed a simpler and more reliable solution. Having the profile of a target user and the needs of our client in mind, it has been decided that most of the issues would be avoided by sending out a packet product: an arm-band that is already connected to our Teltonika Networks RUTX11 router. TOPOLOGY BENEFITS Ease of use – the package comes ready to use and requires no complicated set-up from a user. Reliability – RUTX11 with 4G LTE Cat 6 offers speed up to 300Mbps and has dual SIM, which is important for users living in remote areas and provides Failover functionality to secure the data transmission at all times. Security – RUTX11 offers high-security protocols (VPN, Firewall, IPsec, Access Control) to protect the data of a sensitive nature. - Continuous Water Quality Monitoring & Analysis
Discover how Teltonika Networks' TRB140 IoT gateway revolutionises water quality monitoring: compact and reliable connectivity for continuous analysis. Continuous Water Quality Monitoring & Analysis PDF PDF PDF SUMMARY Human ingenuity and innovation seem to have no limits. We went to the moon, took the first photo of a black hole, and invented the cupcake. But none of these would be possible if it weren’t for a basic resource many of us often take for granted: clean, drinkable water. When you think about it, it isn’t obvious that the water coming out of your kitchen’s tap is safe to drink. Our ingenuity has the significant byproduct of pollution, and the difference between quenching your thirst and low- key developing cancer is one a lot of research and quality management is done to keep separate. How do you know your water is safe to drink? CHALLENGE Generally speaking, determining the drinkability of any water source involves testing its chemical composition, such as its pH (acidity), whether it contains toxins such as microplastics, and other variables such as temperature. A qualified scientist takes a sample from a water source every so often, analyzes it, and compares it with the recommended standards of a reputable organization, such as the WHO or the USEPA. If any variable deviates from the standard, the water is deemed undrinkable. If none of them do, you can go ahead and hydrate to your heart’s desire. Easy peasy. Well, not so fast. How often is “every so often”? If pH was low yesterday, for example, can we really be sure it’s still low today? Is this a risk we can afford to take? Water quality data is too important to be periodically tested. It needs to be monitored continuously. This means our scientist’s task must instead be carried out by machines, which don’t experience work-disrupting needs such as “feeling tired” How complicated would it be to implement such an automated system, and just how costly would it be? SOLUTION The simple answer is: not that much. The continuous sampling and calculation can be done by a sensor equipped with a measurement processing unit. That sensor would need an internet connection to send the data to a server for storage and send alerts to personnel whenever the analysis finds a critical deviation from the acceptable standards. When the water source is a relatively urban area with good cell reception, that internet connection is easy to establish. When it’s in the middle of nowhere, where only wild animals tread – not so much. This is when an industrial gateway, such as our TRB140, must be included in the setup. This gateway is very small and boasts an OpenWRT-based operating system, making it a highly customizable and easy-to-install Swiss army knife of a connectivity device. Compatibility with our Remote Management System (RMS) enables the TRB140 to be managed remotely, a crucial feature for use in remote water sources that would otherwise require a substantial amount of traveling and related costs to operate. TOPOLOGY BENEFITS The TRB140 provides a stable and reliable cellular internet connection at an affordable cost without adding setup complexity. Designed with flexibility and compatibility in mind, this device is small in size and includes an OpenWRT-based operating system, allowing it to fit perfectly in a variety of solutions that struggle with applying more conventional, less flexible devices. RMS compatibility makes this gateway shine even brighter in IoT solutions in remote locations while including extra security features such as SMS control, firewall, VPN, and IPsec. WHY TELTONIKA NETWORKS? It’s easy to take certain aspects of modern life for granted. It’s a sign that things are working seamlessly behind the curtain, so much so that we simply get used to it. But it isn’t obvious – it’s the result of a seamless IoT solution working perfectly. This seamlessness is a feature of our device portfolio and one we keep in mind from the very beginning of design to the last measure of quality assurance. When you choose Teltonika Networks, you choose that seamlessness. LIKE THIS STORY? Share it with friends! Facebook X (Twitter) LinkedIn Copy link GOT A QUESTION? We’re here to help! - Simple Connectivity for Complex Manufacturing Lines
A PoE+ switch can enable simple connectivity in complex manufacturing lines. Here’s how. Simple Connectivity For Complex Manufacturing Lines PDF PDF SUMMARY A good manufacturing line consistently delivers the same quality product, but an excellent one eventually necessitates expansion as demand threatens to exceed supply. That’s the desired outcome, of course, but it can also create some technical hurdles. An essential part of the line’s success is its single network connecting its many devices. If the infrastructure of this connectivity network is solid, the expansion is pretty straightforward – just add more! If it isn’t... well, let’s just say your engineers will need a lot more coffee. CHALLENGE A manufacturing line working seamlessly is no easy feat. The HMI, PLC, sensors, and robotic crane all need to communicate with each other for this orchestra to stay in tune, but also so that it doesn’t accidentally damage itself with a single, poorly-timed movement. A single factory often has many manufacturing lines, and each of them needs to be connected to a server for proper data management and remote control. As new lines are added and any given line expands, more devices are added to the growing network. Like any ripple effect, any amount of complexity in the foundation of the connectivity infrastructure will scale with each expansion, growing exponentially into an unwieldy mess of cables, nodes, and blinking devices just waiting to go awry. The network must be centralized with maximum simplicity to prevent that from happening. SOLUTION Centralizing your network with simplicity is the job for an unmanaged industrial switch, such as our trustworthy TSW210. Designed with 2 SFP ports for long-range fiberoptic communication and 8 Gigabit Ethernet port, this industrial switch can effortlessly maintain a wired connection with the server and the manufacturing line’s devices. AUTONOMOUS RACING CAR CONNECTIVITY POWERED BY RUTX11 PDF SUMMARY Not that many years ago, driverless cars sounded like a concept from a science fiction genre. Today, self-driving vehicles are beginning to emerge and are expected to reach USD 61.93 billion by 2026. Although the potential is enormous, the adoption in consumer lives is still out of reach regardless of previous predictions by the leading names in the tech and automotive sectors. Despite considerable efforts to make autonomous cars a part of our everyday lives, more engineering work still needs to be done before they are safe for everyone on the road. However, this does not stop from developing independent driverless cars and hosting various competitions and races. CHALLENGE Every driverless car needs a stable wireless connection to the internet. Live monitoring and parameter control requires reliable zero-latency connectivity for timely adjustments and safety. For example, the team can access the vehicle’s central control unit from a distance to limit the speed, adjust the maximum power of the motors, or fine-tune the driving dynamics controls. The security aspect is also essential, just as the resistance to high and low temperatures, humidity, and vibrations. PARTNER StarkStrom Augsburg is a non-profit organization for the promotion of student research in the field of electromobility and autonomous driving. It is made up of committed students of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Environmental and Process Engineering, Business, IT, and Design. Every year, student groups develop a formula car with an electric drive system to be demonstrated as part of the international Formula Projekt Formula Student competition. SOLUTION Two Teltonika Networks Dual-SIM RUTX11 routers provide connectivity in this solution: one in the driverless car itself and the other in the base station. The router in the vehicle dials into the base station network to establish a stable connection between the two routers. The team members can connect to the base station via Ethernet or Wi-Fi and can use it to access the car for live monitoring and adjustments, including speed, battery voltages, motor temperature, and other parameters. A Lap Time Measurement Unit connects to the same router via Ethernet to accurately measure the lap and finish time. It transmits the time data synchronized by GPS via Wi-Fi. When the race cars are back in the workshop, the routers automatically connect to the local network. Then the team members can access them to pull out data from the data logger, reprogram the control unit or make changes on the driverless vehicle embedded PC. BENEFITS Multiple connectivity options to connect different equipment inside the driverless car and in the base station. Highest level security ensured by advanced features like top-trusted multiple VPNs, Firewall, Access Control, Attack Prevention, and more. Optimized traffic flow with load balancing functionality.
